Christoph Syldatk (* 1956 in Hildesheim ) is a German microbiologist , biochemist and biotechnologist . He is Professor of Technical Biology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology .

Life

Christoph Syldatk attended school in Bad Salzdetfurth and Hildesheim until 1974 and then completed his military service in Hamburg and Oldenburg . From 1976 to 1981 he studied biology at the Technical University of Braunschweig and received his doctorate for a scientific thesis on the production and characterization of microbially produced biosurfactants in Fritz Wagner's group. From 1985 to 1990 he worked as an assistant professor at the Institute for Biochemistry and Biotechnology at the TU Braunschweig and was head of the research group Regio- and Stereoselective Bioconversion . Together with Fritz Wagner and Karsten Krohn he worked on cyclic amides and together with Reinhold Tacke on silicon-organic composites. In 1989, a research stay at Wageningen University in Jan de Bont's Industrial Microbiology group , where he worked on epoxide- degrading enzymes.

In 1990 Syldatk received his habilitation, his habilitation dealt with the microbial hydantoin metabolism. From 1990 to 1991 he was a lecturer at the Institute for Biochemistry and Biotechnology at the TU Braunschweig, and from 1991 to 1993 he received a Heisenberg grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG). Since 1993 he has been a professor at the Institute for Bioprocess Engineering at the University of Stuttgart . In 2000 he completed a research stay at the University of Kent in Canterbury in the group of Alan T. Bull and worked on nitrile- degrading bacteria. Since 2003 he has held a chair at the Chair of Technical Biology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (formerly University of Karlsruhe).

His current research focuses on the biocatalysis of lipids, amino acids, organic acids through fermentation or by means of enzymatic reactions. His publications and publications deal with the characterization of new enzymes and microorganisms for the purpose of the sustainable synthesis of chemicals. He now has over 200 publications, including 18 patents and numerous book chapters.
