Karsten Krohn (born April 20, 1944 in Hademarschen ; † October 10, 2013 ) was a German chemist ( organic chemistry ).

Krohn studied from 1963 Chemistry at the Technical University of Berlin and the University of Kiel , received in 1968 his degree and was in 1971 when Albert Mondon (1911-1991) in Kiel on the structure and synthesis of alkaloids from amaryllis plants doctorate (Strukturalaufklärung and synthesis experiments of nitrogen-containing neutral substances from narcissus bulbs ), especially from narciclasin . As a post-doctoral student , he was with Ekkehard Winterfeldt in Hanover in 1973/74 , where he dealt with the synthesis of the cytostatically effective camptothecin . From 1975 he was a university assistant at the University of Hamburg, where he qualified as a professor in 1979 in biochemistry and organic chemistry. His work with anthracyclines began in Hamburg . In 1981 he became professor at the TU Braunschweig and in 1991 full professor for organic chemistry at the University of Paderborn as successor to Wolfgang Sucrow . From 1994 to 1997 he was dean of the chemistry faculty.

He dealt with the chemistry of natural substances and their synthesis, for example isolation of biologically active substances from fungi and their synthesis ( anthracyclines , anthracyclinones ), synthesis and development of chemotherapeutic agents against cancer (such as daunorubicin ), transition metal-catalyzed oxidations and reductions ( Meerwein- Ponndorf-Verley reductions ) and chemistry of carbohydrates and glycosides . He also dealt with the analysis of the effective components of African and Asian medicinal plants and the synthesis of pharmacologically interesting substances such as NAD analogues.

In 1984 he was visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison , 1996 in Nancy and 2001 at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila . Krohn was an honorary doctor of the Université du Maine . In 1982 he received the Karl Winnacker Prize. In 2004 he became a Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. In 1992 he was chairman of the International Symposium on the Chemical Synthesis of Antibiotics and related Microbial Products .
