Scribd is a web portal that users could initially use to upload documents and make them available to other people. Because of its similarity to the video platform YouTube , Scribd is also known as "YouTube for documents".

history

The beta phase of the platform began in autumn 2006 and productive operation began on March 6, 2007. The range now also includes books, audio books, sheet music and selected newspaper articles. According to its own information, the portal currently has around 100 million hits per month and has over 1,000,000 paying users (as of September 2019).

In August 2020, Scribd took over the Slideshare platform from LinkedIn ( Microsoft ). Slideshare will be operationally managed by Scribd from September 24, 2020. Scribd and Slideshare are to be merged.

Functions

Portal users can upload documents in various formats such as Microsoft Office , OpenOffice.org , PDF and various image formats. The uploaded documents can be marked either as publicly accessible or as private. Only public documents are indexed by search engines and can be found using Scribd's internal search.

The uploaded files are converted to various other formats such as PDF and Flash . The Flash version of the documents allows them to be integrated into other websites using HTML code. This enables a preview of the document. The preview offers scrolling through the document, printing out on paper, a full text search and a zoom function . On May 5, 2010, a version based on HTML5 was presented, which is intended to replace the previous Flash-based version.

Downloading is generally possible as a PDF file or in the original format of the document, but often only for registered users with a chargeable user account. Until September 2007, the documents could be downloaded as audio files, which were then available in MP3 format and created by language software. This service was discontinued because of the high computing power required for this.

The file formats in which downloading should be permitted can be specified for each individual document. Scribd also supports the Creative Commons licensing system .

Like YouTube, Scribd is grappling with copyright infringement . In the meantime, Scribd has given up the possible management of the uploaded documents via folders, and the individual files can only be put together in collections. The documents summarized in the collections can only be viewed by registered users.
