Location of the municipality of Hanerau-Hademarschen in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district
map

Hanerau-Hademarschen is a municipality in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district in Schleswig-Holstein . It is located south of the Kiel Canal on the western edge of the Geestrück , in the middle of the triangle between the Holstein district towns of Rendsburg , Heide and Itzehoe . Heiser, Lerchenfeld, Holstentor, Hamer, Papenwiese and Wilhelmsburg are in the municipality.

Origin of name

There is no reliable evidence of the original origin of the place name Hanerau , apart from the previous medieval names and oral traditions. The castle Hanrowe , Hanrouwe , Hanerouwe or Hanrow (all four spellings were used over the centuries ), built between 1180 and 1185 (possibly earlier) and first mentioned in 1186 , was built on a tributary of the same name to the Eider (which is now in the North Baltic Sea Channel opens). It is not known whether the castle got its name from the river or vice versa. The fact is, however, that hana (n) in Germanic and in most of the Old Norse languages, as well as han in Middle High German, meant "Hahn" or " Auerhahn " and mhd. Ouwe / ou / oue denoted an "Au (e)", a river or a land by or in the water (the pronunciation has remained unchanged since Middle High German). Interestingly, ouwe / ou / oue also means “island” in Low High German , and the castle was built on an island in a lake formed by the Hanerau river. When the Counts of the High Middle Ages sought out their building site there, they were probably taken with the safe location, as well as the large number of capercaillie there, which lived and were also hunted in the floodplains of the extensive mixed forests in that area Bow and arrow . The builders named their moated castle accordingly . In modern High German, Hanerau would be called “Hahnen-Au” or “Auerhahnen-Au”.

The origin of the place name Hademarschen (Low German: Haa'maschen, locally also called "Homarschen") has not yet been clarified. There are none for the name after a legendary “General Hadumar” (or Hadmar, Hademar, Hadamar, also Hathumar , as is common in the Saxon nobility), from ahd. Hadu- (fight) and ahd. -Mar (big, famous) secured sources. Certainly these old high German word stems should play a role in the naming, so also Germanic mari for a standing shallow body of water, old high German mari for moor, swamp. While Hademarschen is not in what is now called the marshland , the alluvial land along the North Sea coast, but on the higher Geest , river marshes could also be meant, which, however, only make up a fraction of the local area. Since constant battles with the Dithmarschern are documented, it is also conceivable “where there was a quarrel against the march ”. The family name Hadenfeldt is still widespread in the area today, from "Hader-Feld" (battlefield). There is also a smaller place called Hadenfeld 11 km south of Hademarschen, which also derives its name from “Hadumar” or the word “fight”. In addition, there was a "Hadmarsdorf" on the Danube in the Middle Ages, near today's Gänserndorf , not far from Vienna , which was named after a Hadmar (also Hademar), who was not a Saxon but a Kuenringer . The origin of the Kuenringers can be traced back to Bamberg or Trier, and an old drawing of their family tree shows a sign with the name “von Sahsen”.

history

Hanerau Castle before its destruction in 1644 (sketch 1862)

The area around Hanerau-Hademarschen was settled more than 5000 years ago, as the barrows from the Neolithic age on the Hademarscher mountains show. The village settlement of Hademarschen already existed around the birth of Christ, a first small wooden church should have been built before the year 1000, the Hanerau Castle was built at the end of the 12th century, the first stone church in Hademarschen at the beginning of the 13th century, while the village Hanerau did not come into being until the turn of the century 1799/1800. The places that have grown together in the course of the 19th century have experienced an eventful history, under repeated changing German and Danish rule, with many authorities, such as kings, dukes, counts and other nobles who came and went, and the places were the scenes of many battles with and between invading armies and marauders , who suffered many casualties and great damage from arson and persecution. Hanerau-Hademarschen became known far beyond the borders through Theodor Storm , who created his most famous works here between 1880 and 1888, including the “ Schimmelreiter ”. The construction of the nearby Kiel Canal at the end of the 19th century allowed the place to flourish continuously, when handicrafts and trade developed significantly alongside the previously predominant peasant economy. Due to the refugees in Schleswig-Holstein after the Second World War , the population temporarily doubled. A decisive recent event was the total loss of the 800-year-old Severinkirche (Hademarschen) due to a fire on December 27, 2003.

politics

Community representation

Distribution of seats in the Hanerau-Hademarschen municipal council (municipal election 2013)

Of the 17 seats in the municipal council, the CDU has eight seats since the local elections in May 2013, the SPD six and the community of voters WG three.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on August 17, 1970.

Blazon : “In silver, growing out of a blue shield base separated by a wavy cut, Saint Severin in a red chasuble, with a golden bishop's cap, golden bishop's staff in his left hand and a golden, towerless church model in his right, accompanied by a red cross with paws on the top right; in the base of the shield, from left to right, an arm with silver armor holding a golden, rooted oak tree. "

The division of the municipal coat of arms is based on the merger of the two previously independent places Hanerau and Hademarschen in 1938, as can also be seen from the municipality name. The wave cut and the shield colors refer to the second components of both place names, which refer to water-rich areas, marshes or floodplains. A seal of the parish of Hademarschen, probably created around 1450, shows Saint Severin as the patron saint of the local church. The seal was in use until the second half of the 17th century. As in the historical seal of the parish, the saint represents the town of Hademarschen in today's municipal coat of arms. The paw cross is a sign of the saint and may also point to the Hademarsch crossroads. The armored arm holding a young tree in the base of the shield is based on the coat of arms of the founder of Hanerau, Johann Wilhelm Mannhardt . The medieval castle, the subsequent estate and the town of Hanerau, founded in 1801, are represented by this figure. The young oak plant in the hand of the knight depicts the foundation process. The color scheme is mainly coordinated with the colors of Schleswig-Holstein.

The coat of arms was designed by the Brunsbüttel heraldist Willy "Horsa" Lippert .

flag

The flag was approved on May 9, 1988.

The list of cultural monuments Hanerau-Hademarschen comes from the list of monuments of Schleswig-Holstein.

A monument in the Waldpark Wilhelmshain and his villa, which was later converted into a museum, remind us that the poet Theodor Storm lived and worked in Hanerau-Hademarschen from 1880 to 1888. During those years he wrote, among other things, his most famous novella, the Schimmelreiter .

Until December 27, 2003, the medieval Severinkirche (Hademarschen) was one of the sights . It burned to the ground on the night of December 27, 2003. The new building was inaugurated in 2007.

The Hademarsch cemetery next to the church, which was rebuilt after the major fire, is laid out like a park and contains old tombstones and memorials for those who died in both world wars, as well as several free-standing bronze busts of famous Germans.

The deceased were not buried in family graves at the Waldfriedhof near Gut Hanerau, which was laid out in 1805, but separated according to sex, otherwise only to be found once in Christiansfeld , Denmark, the settlement of the Moravian Brethren founded in 1773 .

The manor house, which stands on a peninsula in Lake Hanerau, was rebuilt in the 17th century as an aristocratic residence that had existed for centuries after the old castle "Hanrowe", originally built in the 12th century against the incursions of the Dithmarschers, in 1644 had been destroyed by the Swedes. Hinrich Gysbert van der Smessen had today's manor house built in neo-classical forms in 1834/35 according to plans by H. Schröder.

Also worth seeing is the grain water mill founded in 1630 (or earlier) in Mannhardtstrasse 76 in Hanerau, which is still fully functional, can be visited and where all kinds of festivals are regularly celebrated and meetings take place.

Local museum

The local history museum Hanerau-Hademarschen , located in the monastery 12, opened in 1984 , contains various exhibitions on local history as well as permanent exhibitions on the poet Theodor Storm and the history of the Kiel Canal.

leisure

Flak tower from World War II, Hademarscher Berge, now a lookout tower

Hademarschen has a heated open swimming pool with a water temperature of 23 ° C, which is open from May to September, with spacious lawns. There are tennis courts and a riding stable in the immediate vicinity. In addition to hiking and biking trails through the many forests and meadows in the municipality there are the "Hademarscher mountains" a climbing ( ropes ), a two-kilometer forest trail and an open passage grave (illustrations on "Stone Age and Bronze Age" above). There is also an old anti-aircraft tower from the Second World War, which is now set up as a lookout tower and offers a good view to the south, west and north. Two soccer fields of the SV Merkur soccer club complete the picture “am Bergen”.

The Kiel Canal is only a few kilometers away from Hanerau-Hademarschen and can be crossed at the Grünentaler Hochbrücke in the direction of Albersdorf (Holstein) and Heide (Holstein) or by car ferries at Fischerhütte and Oldenbüttel . At Oldenbüttel there is also a canal switch in which smaller or particularly slow ships anchor temporarily in order to clear the main fairway if a larger ship is to pass in oncoming traffic or overtake faster. The old Grünental double arch bridge with a span of 156.5 m, which was built during the construction of the canal, was dismantled in May 1988 and replaced by a modern, parallel construction in the immediate vicinity. Like the previous one, it also carries both rail and road traffic.

Hanerau pond with Gutsinsel

Also worth seeing is the Hanerau estate with its lake, an old barn (now a café), a park and the forest cemetery, as well as various memorials and a statue of the poet Theodor Storm, who went for walks here.

Hanerau-Hademarschen has more than 85 registered clubs, such as various sports clubs, shooting clubs, choirs and music clubs, women and youth groups, as well as those that focus on the countryside, forest and animals. In addition to public events, many of them always welcome guests. There is also a public library in town.

The annual event calendar shows a number of attractions, such as classic car rallies in summer, the popular folk festival in September, the Homar market , a fair in October, and the traditional Christmas market, always on the 3rd Advent, plus bird shooting, which goes back to the Middle Ages , Parties of the volunteer fire brigade, sports festivals and much more

Like many other places, Hanerau-Hademarschen also offers various options for “farm holidays”.

Overall, the place shows a good, closed form of settlement and infrastructure, in which all sights worth seeing and experiencing can be reached on foot or by bike. Horses and riders are also welcome everywhere.
