Hathumar

Hathumar (* around 760? † August 9, 815 in Paderborn ) was the first bishop of Paderborn .

Hathumar (Old High German "the famous in battle", Latin Hatumarus) came from the Saxon nobility. Most likely, after the subjugation of the pagan Saxons and the destruction of Irminsul, he was handed over as one of twelve Saxon hostages and raised in the diocese of Würzburg .

Charlemagne installed him in 806/807 as the first bishop in the Saxon diocese of Paderborn , which had been under the sovereignty of the diocese of Würzburg since 799. The Paderborn Cathedral was completed under Hathumar. As the culmination of his term of office, the summoning of the Imperial Assembly 815, which presumably presupposes “orderly church conditions”.

He is also credited with founding the first Saxon monastery in Hethis in 815 , which was relocated to Corvey from 822 . Hathumar is buried in the crypt of the High Cathedral in Paderborn .

Hathumar's day of remembrance in the Archdiocese of Paderborn is August 7th, together with his successor, St. Badurad, and the later Blessed Bishop Meinwerk .
