The Haunsberg is an 835 meter high, mostly wooded mountain ridge in the north of the Salzburg-Umgebung (Flachgau) district in the Austrian state of Salzburg .

Location and landscape

The Haunsberg is largely an island in the Salzburg Alpine foothills , not far north of the city of Salzburg , of which it is part of the mountain range. The length of the entire hill massif is around 12 km and is located in the communities of Anthering , Berndorf bei Salzburg , Nussdorf am Haunsberg and Obertrum am See .

The ridge runs essentially from south-southwest to north-northeast and separates the valley of the Salzach in the west from the Salzburg lake area in the east. Its highest point is at the southern end on the municipality border between Anthering and Nussdorf am Haunsberg. The mountain flattens out towards the north.

It is counted among the Salzburg Pre-Alps or Salzkammergut Mountains , the north-westernmost mountain range of which it forms, and belongs to the subalpine flysch zone .

Development and sights

On the Haunsberg there is the Kaiserbuche , a symbolic tree that is considered a landmark of the northern Flachgau, as well as a radar system from Austro Control and several prehistoric sites .

Furthermore, the Vega Observatory on Haunsberg was built here until August 2018 instead of the Salzburg Volkssternwarte on the nearby Voggenberg , as an observatory of the House of Nature . The one-meter telescope is one of the most powerful telescopes in Central Europe. A 35 cm telescope will also remain on Voggenberg , the previous location to the south.

On the west side in the municipality of Nussdorf am Haunsberg, the Kroisbachgraben with its fossil finds is of geological importance. The church of St. Pankraz am Haunsberg and the ruins of Haunsperg are also located there .

For tourist purposes, a circular route was signposted from the Kaiserbuche to the south . There is also a hiking trail along the ridge. The mountain offers several places with a good view.

sport and freetime

Climbs with different degrees of difficulty and surface conditions, the proximity to the city of Salzburg and the view make the Haunsberg a popular destination for cyclists and mountain bikers. The steep climbs on the northwest side near Schlößl and Kleinberg present special challenges . From the south there are access options from Berndorf , the Trumer Lakes and Anthering on roads with little traffic.

Sports scientist and cyclist Lukas Stadler drove the Everesting Challenge on June 2, 2020 on the northwest side . For the 8,848 meters in altitude and 208.5 kilometers he needed 13: 27h. He is the first to complete this challenge on the Haunsberg.

For runners, the Nussdorf Ski Club runs the Haunsberglauf. There are about 400 meters of altitude difference to be overcome over a distance of almost 6 kilometers.
