Terfens is a municipality with 2160 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Schwaz district (on the border with the Innsbruck-Land district ) in Tyrol ( Austria ). The community is located in the judicial district of Schwaz . Until April 1, 1928, the municipality was part of the Innsbruck district.

geography

Terfens is located in the Lower Inn Valley , about 20 km east of Innsbruck . The Inn forms the southern boundary of the municipality, in the north and east it is characterized by the Vomper Bach , which flows into the Inn.

The settlement is formed by the clustered village of Terfens on a narrow inner terrace, Neu-Terfens to the west and Vomperbach to the east. The districts Umlberg, Schlögelsbach, Eggen and Mairbach are scattered on a low mountain range terrace above the Inn Valley, the district Weißlahn on the Innauen. From the Umlberg a hiking trail leads to the Ganalm, an alpine pasture at 1190  m .

Terfens borders on: Fritzens in the west, Gnadenwald in the northwest, Kolsass in the southwest, Pill in the southeast, Vomp in the east and north, Weer in the south.

Place name

The name Terfens is of Celtic origin and means "Eichat". Already in the late 11th century (1085-1097) Terfens is in a traditional note of the Bishopric of Brixen as "Teruanes" testified in writing.

Terfens received its municipal coat of arms on February 16, 1975, it shows in red five golden acorns in pairs and horizontally .

The climate in Terfens is characterized by a temperate continental, inner-alpine climate. The average annual rainfall in the lower area is around 1000 mm, in the mountain fractions 1500 mm. The municipality rises from south to north by 1000 m. The average annual temperature in the valley is 9-10 ° C, in the mountain fractions 2-10 °.

The Terfens band was first mentioned in a document in 1796 when the Maria Larch pilgrimage chapel was reopened. In 2016 the band had 55 active musicians.

In autumn there is a cattle drive from the Engalm over the Lamsenjoch and the roads from Vomp to Terfens.

As in other municipalities in the Schwaz district, there is the custom of grass- ringing in the spring , when boys walk through the village with bells and announce the end of winter.

Site design

In 1985 Terfens was named the “Most Beautiful Flower Village in Europe” as part of the European competition “ Entente Florale Europe ”.

Economy and Infrastructure

Small and medium-sized enterprises are mainly in the field of construction and wood processing, which are located in the districts of Neu-Terfens and Vomperbach, while the settlements on the low mountain range are characterized by agriculture. Terfens is also an out-commuter community.

Terfens can be reached via the Inntal motorway A 12 with the exits Wattens in the west or Vomp in the east. The Terfens-Weer (near Neu-Terfens) and Pill-Vomperbach stops on the Westbahn are in the municipality .

In the course of increasing the capacity of the Munich-Verona main railway line, two projects affecting the municipality are being carried out: a 1330 m long gallery and the 8,480 m long Stans- Terfens tunnel . The shell was completed in 2008, the tunnel has been in operation since the end of 2012.

Excursion destinations

The planet path begins at the local church in Vomperbach and provides a true-to-scale overview of our solar system. The path leads through the Forchat ( Föhrenwald ), the only larger forest on the valley floor of the Lower Inn Valley.

In May 2012, the highly acclaimed “ House is upside down ” property was opened in Vomperbach . A fully furnished house is upside down and offers visitors the opportunity to see the world from a bat's perspective. Whether in the living room, kitchen, bathroom or garage - everything is faithfully reproduced.

Maria Larch

Maria Larch

Maria Larch is a beautiful pilgrimage chapel with a healing spring above Terfens. In the 17th century, the farmer's wife Magdalena Bogner felt on their way to the village spontaneously a larch ( Larch called to prayer). Later a chapel was built next to the larch.

Personalities

The couple Paul and Karola Unterkircher , who carried out bomb attacks in South Tyrol ( Pfunderer Buam or Ein Tirol ), lived in Terfens. After Karola Unterkircher's arrest, the council of Terfens campaigned for her to be pardoned.
