history

The name Hart is derived from Old High German and means something like "forest cleared by clearing". The Harterberg was first mentioned as “mons Hardarius” around 1140 in the so-called “Schlitter donation”, a forgery from the 14th century. In the years 1188 and 1198, Archbishop Adalbert III. of Salzburg the establishment of a hospital in Hartberg ( "Hardareberge" ), which was consecrated to John the Evangelist . The place names Holdernach and Helfenstein also indicate Bavarian settlement in the 8th century. The southern district of Kohlstatt gained importance around 1700 when the wood that had been lifted from the Ziller was processed into charcoal here. The customer was the hammer and ironworks in Kleinboden on the opposite side of the valley.

During the warlike events during the uprising of the Tyroleans against Bavarian rule, Hart was largely spared from destruction in 1809.

coat of arms

The black dome represents a coal pile, which refers to the once important role of charcoal production. In this context, the colors red and gold can be interpreted, which stand for heat, embers and fire.
