Gerlos is located in the Gerlostal , a side valley of the Zillertal , which branches off towards the east near Zell am Ziller . The settlement extends over several hamlets along the road to the Gerlos Pass on the valley floor at around 1200  m ( Schwarzach, Gmünd, Neu-Ried, Ried, Au, Mitterhof, Oberhof, Innertal ). The municipality borders the state of Salzburg in the east . To the east of Gerlos the Schönach flows into the Gerlosbach .

history

The name Gerlos is of Illyrian origin and was called in early times "Gerlais", the Gerlos pass was first mentioned in 1154/1156 as "saltus Gerrlaise", at the same time (1154/57) the forest area as "silvam cui nomen Gerleis". From the 9th century onwards, the Salzburg monastery exercised the basic and sovereign rights in the Zillertal (as well as in Gerlos), and there was lively trade across the pass. Interest-paying Schwaighöfe were established in the 14th century . During this time, gold mining operated in this area also gained economic importance.

The pass played a major role as a strategically important transition between Tyrol and Salzburg in the Tyrolean struggle for freedom in 1809 . In 1816 the border between Tyrol and Salzburg was finally established at the top of the pass. It was not until the 1960s that Gerlosstrasse was expanded on both sides and offers a connection to the famous Krimml waterfalls . In the course of the road expansion, the annual Durlaßboden storage facility with the Funsingau power plant and the Gmünd weekly storage facility for the Gerlos power plants were created (the power house is in Rohrberg ).
