The Gerlostal is a 20 km long side valley of the Zillertal in Tyrol .

Location and landscape

The Gerlostal branches off from the Zillertal near Zell am Ziller and runs in a west-east direction. It separates the Kitzbühel Alps in the north from the Zillertal Alps in the south. The valley is traversed by the Gerlosbach, which flows into the Ziller at Zell am Ziller . There is a road connection to the Pinzgau ( Salzach Valley ) via the Gerlos Pass ( 1531  m above sea level ).

The confluence with the Zillertal is a narrow gorge. On the steep slopes in the outer valley area there are predominantly rotten and individual farms , which make up the communities of Gerlosberg and Hainzenberg . About in the middle of the valley, where the valley floor becomes wider and flat, is the main town Gerlos at 1245  m above sea level. A. The upper valley in the area of the Gerlos pass is occupied by the Durlaßboden reservoir . Side valleys branch off almost exclusively to the south, including the Schwarzachtal, the Wimmertal, the Schönachtal through which the Schönach flows and the Wildgerlostal , in which the upper reaches of the Gerlosbach runs.

economy

In the past, alpine farming and timber industries played an important role, from the 17th to the 19th century gold was mined in Gerlos, Gerlosberg and Hainzenberg. The side valleys are still managed today with alpine pastures. Today, however, tourism (with numerous lifts for winter sports) and the energy industry (Durlaßboden and Gmünd reservoirs of the Gerlos power plant group ) are the most important branches of business.
