Rohrbach bei Mattersburg ( Hungarian : Fraknónádasd , Croatian : Orbuh ) is a market town in the Mattersburg district in Burgenland in Austria . The community is located in the Rosalia-Kogelberg Nature Park .

geography

Rohrbach bei Mattersburg is located on the northern slopes of the Ödenburger Mountains on the Austrian-Hungarian border. The place is embedded in the hilly landscape of the easternmost foothills of the Alps, the landscape of which is composed of the opposing morphological forms of the Eastern Alps and the Hungarian lowlands.

The Alps run out gently here, their last hills are lost in the last foothills of the small Hungarian plain. The peaks of the Ödenburg Mountains are adorned by a dense mixed forest, which is adjoined by a multi-segmented agricultural field with an abundance of fruit trees; Numerous cherry trees give the landscape an almost fairytale flair during the heyday. The relatively warm and dry temperate Pannonian climate allows mighty chestnut groves to grow and promotes viticulture.

The sunny slopes of the Rohrbacher Kogel, with their numerous orchards, dry lawns and hay meadows, are among the most beautiful and extensive dry landscapes in Burgenland. The mild climate, the calcareous soil and the early clearing of the forest led to the emergence of a warmth-loving, extremely species-rich flora and fauna. The area is placed under special protection as the "Rohrbacher Kogel Nature Reserve" .

The “Teichwiesen” located in a valley at the foot of the Kogel are also a nature reserve . The largely regretted wetland in the center of the area is bordered by flood meadows, which in the higher areas, the "hillside meadows", merge into extensive, extensively used poor and dry meadows. The importance of the European protected area in the Mattersburger Hügelland lies in the variety of different habitat types, ranging from dry grass and various forms of hay meadows to swamp and water areas. Associated with this is an extremely large biodiversity, including some highly endangered animal and plant species.

In the wooded south of the municipality, in the Rohrbacher Wald, the Aubach rises as the uppermost section of the river Ikva .

history

Rohrbach in the south-east of Marz and Mattersdorf / Nagy Márton (center), around 1880 (recording sheet of the regional survey )

Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg . Later in the Roman Empire , the area was part of the province of Pannonia . At that time a road led from "Scarabantia" (Ödenburg) to "Aquae" (Baden) via Rohrbacher area. In the immediate vicinity, the remains of a Roman country villa were excavated in the 1960s.

In 1899, a depot with 43 gold coins from the middle of the 1st century BC was opened next to the railway line on the Breitbaueräckern. Found. The finder, Alois Kugler from Ödenburg ( Sopron ), brought the coins to the museums of Budapest , Sopron, as well as to some smaller local museums. There are three coins in the Sopron Museum, one of the Boisch BIATEC type, an Athene-Alkis type and a rainbow bowl . In the same year, a pot with 65 gold coins is said to have been found, but there is no more detailed information about it.

Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Fraknónádásd be used. After the end of the First World War, German West Hungary was assigned to Austria in the Treaty of St. Germain in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ). Rohrbach bei Mattersburg has been a market town since 1992 (through VO 47).
