Pöttelsdorf is a municipality with 762 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Mattersburg district in Burgenland in Austria . The Hungarian place name of the municipality is Petőfalva .
geography
The municipality of Pöttelsdorf is a valley settlement along the Wulka valley, part of the area rises gently in the south against the Marzer Kogel and forms the traditional wine-growing region.
The old course of the Wulka was restored; the Wulka biotope is a flood retention basin that has been embedded in nature in an environmentally friendly manner and additionally enriches the scenic charm with its flora and fauna.
history
Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg . Today's Pöttelsdorf was later in the Roman province of Pannonia .
In 1926, a woman's skeleton was found while beating the well . Based on the grave goods - a bronze bracelet and two clay vessels - the grave can be dated to the Early La Tène period (~ 380 BC - 280 BC). The body burial of a young man, also from the early La Tène period, was recovered from the Burgenland State Museum in 1984 as part of an emergency excavation by Karl Kaus . Located on a loess slope in the west of the village, it was discovered while digging in the former Catholic cemetery. Grave goods were a bronze sieve from the Hallstatt period , several bottles of different sizes, a Braubacher- style bowl and two fibulae . The iron weapons, a lance tip and a damaged sword with scabbard show that the buried person is probably a warrior. The bronze sieve was apparently made from an Eastern Alpine Hallstatt period cup, which suggests that long-lived older traditions will continue to exist.
