Life

Ludwig Schöne came from Saxony and received his training in Leipzig and Hanover . From 1871 he can be documented in Vienna, although he may have initially worked in various architectural offices before there can be evidence of buildings he built independently from the early 1880s. In 1883 he received the right of home in Vienna. During the Ringstrasse era, he was one of the most productive architects in Vienna. In addition, he was active throughout the monarchy. After the end of the First World War , however, he hardly received any orders and died completely impoverished.

Ludwig Schöne was a representative of historicism , who flexibly adapted the design to the purpose of his buildings. He used old German and neo-Baroque forms for his residential buildings, neo- Romanesque and neo-Gothic designs for his church buildings and Byzantine- oriental elements for his synagogues . Schöne, who possessed great skill in a variety of styles and in all areas of building construction, was also able to break away from historicism in the period around 1910 and build modern, highly decorative buildings, as well as residential complexes for the municipality of Vienna in the 1920s . In the area of sacred architecture, it is noticeable that he (himself Protestant) built for all denominations, which was unusual at the time.
