The Evangelical Church in the city park forms the end of October 10th Street in Villach . In its external appearance, the church is one of the main contributions to the sacred architecture of historicism in Carinthia . The church is the main church of the Evangelical Superintendent of Carinthia and East Tyrol .

history

In the 19th century, Villach belonged to the evangelical community of St. Ruprecht . Church services have been celebrated in the gymnasium of the grammar school since 1896. In 1899 Johannes Heinzelmann came to Villach as vicar . In 1902 he was appointed first pastor and in 1928 elected superintendent. Villach was the seat of the Vienna Superintendent and from 1946 the Carinthian .

Building

The church was built from 1901 to 1903 according to plans by Ludwig Schöne in the succession of Friedrich von Schmidt as a neo-Gothic exposed brick building.

The church is a transept. The transept has apsidal ends, the choir ends in a flat end with a low sacristy . The four-story tower in front is crowned by a pointed helmet. The structure of the building is emphasized by the contrast between the brick-red clinker masonry and light-colored stone parts on the structures, decorations and buttresses. The building edges are optically reinforced by doubling the buttresses .

Inside, the side yokes have eight-part ridge vaults, the chapel-like extensions have six-part ridge vaults. Above the crossing is a fan vault. The wooden gallery is supported by cast iron columns. The original stained glass windows, which were probably made by Franz Janisch senior in 1903. were replaced by mirrored windows by Victor Rogy in 2000 . Outside, the windows reflect the reflection of the sky and the trees in the park, and the sky and trees can also be seen from inside.

Furnishing

The interior of the church is uniformly neo-Gothic. The altar shows Jesus in the altarpiece and was probably made by Aloys Poltnigg in 1903. The pulpit on a free-standing column is also by the same artist.
