The Hernalser Main Street is a street in the 17th Vienna district Hernals . It was created in its current form at the end of the 19th century by vaulting the Alserbach and is one of the few streets in Vienna with an avenue character.
history
In the course of the Counter-Reformation , the Protestant-oriented Vienna suburb of Hernals was forcibly Catholicized and a Passionsweg was created from St. Stephen's Cathedral to Hernals, at the end of which the Kalvarienbergkirche was built. The Way of the Cross , opened personally by Emperor Ferdinand II in 1639 , and its annual fasting market paradoxically established Hernals as an entertainment center. Its main artery was the main street (later Hernalser Hauptstraße) along the Alserbach. At the end of the 18th century, the fashion of Sunday excursion tourism spread. With the Zeiserlwagen , an early means of mass transport, one drove to Hernals and over the main road to Dornbach .
After 1873 the Als began to be vaulted under the mayor of Hernals, Elterlein. The project was not completed until 1899. As a result, in the outer area of the main street, an unusually wide street with an avenue character and side lanes was created for Viennese terms. The architects Friedrich König (1842–1906) and Rudolf Feldscharek (1845–1919) even designed a “Boulevard from Vienna to Dornbach” in the early 1880s. Due to a certain lack of representative buildings, however, the (outer) Hernalser Hauptstrasse has not yet been able to meet this ambitious vision. This could change a lot, however, if the building of a U5 line under Hernalser Hauptstrasse in the direction of the town hall, originally planned for the Vienna subway and repeatedly criticized by politicians , came about .
In the area close to the belt, Jörgerstraße now leads over the covered Als into the city; the course of the inner Hernalser Hauptstraße also follows the twists and turns of the Alserbach.
After Hernals had been incorporated into the 17th district of Vienna in 1892 together with the suburbs Dornbach and Neuwaldegg , in 1894 the traffic artery, previously known as the main street, was renamed to Hernalser Hauptstraße.

In the course of the belt regulation, the houses within the belt came to Kinderspitalgasse in 1905. Since then, Hernalser Hauptstrasse has started with house numbers 5 and 12.
