Redigobius is a genus of secondary freshwater fish from the family of Oxudercidae within the goby-like (Gobiiformes).

distribution

The genus occurs in freshwater and brackish water zones on the coasts of the tropical Indo-Pacific from the east coast of Africa ( South Africa , Mozambique ) via Madagascar to Japan , Australia , Guam , Fiji and Tonga . The fish live in the lower reaches of rivers as well as in lakes and ponds in the catchment area of these river sections, as well as in streams that flow directly into the sea, in river mouths, mangroves and seagrass meadows .

features

Redigobius species are 4 to 5 centimeters long. They differ from most other gobies, for which a cylindrical, laterally only slightly flattened body is typical, by their only moderately long, relatively high-backed trunk, which is strongly flattened laterally. In front of the first dorsal fin are greatly enlarged scales, of which the first, which can be even larger, lies against the space between the eyes. The head is otherwise only scaled on the gill covers.

Fin formula : dorsal 1 VI, dorsal 2 I / 6–8, anal I / 4–7. Scale formula : SL 20–30.

The posterior rays of the dorsal fin and anal fin are elongated in males and can extend to the caudal fin. Redigobius species are usually brownish to gray in color and usually show a double dark spot on the base of the caudal fin, vertical dark stripes on the sides of the head and spotted sides of the body.

Way of life

Redigobius species live as territorial fish in sections of water with abundant vegetation, at spawning time - during their stay in the sea - in seagrass meadows. They prefer middle water layers, if there are no hiding places, the bottom of the water. They feed on zooplankton and small bottom-dwelling invertebrates.

Reproduction

The reproductive biology of the genus is only partially known for two species. Redigobius species migrate into the sea to spawn. From aquarium observations we know that the animals ready to reproduce live in narrow caves and crevices. The young fish 1.9 to 2.0 mm long when hatched are, in contrast to other young gobies, already pigmented and have a rather stocky body. The fry are initially pelagic .

So far, 12 valid species have been described:
