The Oxudercidae or Gobionellidae are a family of fish belonging to the goby-like group . In contrast to the more marine real gobies (Gobiidae), the Oxudercidae live mainly in freshwater and in the brackish water of estuaries. If they still live in the sea, they only occur very close to the coast in the Wadden Sea , in mangroves or sea grass meadows . Known types of Gobionellidae are the common goby ( Pomatoschistus microps ) and the sand goby ( Pomatoschistus minutus ), which are also found on the North Sea coast, as well as the different types of amphibious living on tropical shores mudskippers and known from hunting brachygobius ( Brachygobius ).

distribution

Species of the Oxudercidae occur mainly on the coasts of tropical and moderately warm seas. They mostly live in estuaries as well as in fresh water. The tropical Indo-Pacific and temperate Australia region is dominated by species from the Mugilogobius group, although species from the Stenogobius group also occur. The latter is the only Oxudercidae group in the western Atlantic and the eastern central Atlantic. Representatives of the Pomatoschistus lineage occur in the north-eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Pontocaspian region . The genera Acanthogobius , Astrabe and Chasmichthys are endemic to the temperate North Pacific . Since their axial skeleton has some similarities, they may form a monophyletic group together with other genera from the region .

features

No clear diagnostic morphological features ( apomorphies ) can be given for the Oxudercidae . Instead, the family is defined by a combination of characteristics. These include a dorsal fin pterygiophores pattern of 3-12210, one or two epuralia, which are elongated, free-standing bones in the caudal fin skeleton, the paired sensory pores between the eyes, the often gloomy color, the large, often downward-pointing mouth, the small eyes and the often elongated caudal fin. The jockstrap is longer and more delicate than that of the Gobiidae. However, none of these features is considered synapomorphism , as their meaning is still too little understood.

Systematics

The Oxudercidae include around 600 species in around 86 genera. This includes the earlier the family of gobies (Gobiidae) associated subfamilies Aalgrundeln (amblyopinae) MUDSKIPPER (Oxudercinae) and sicydiinae (Sicydiinae).
