The Amblyopinae are a subfamily of the Oxudercidae within the goby-like (Gobiiformes), whose representatives stand out due to their elongated shape and live in tropical, marine and brackish waters worldwide . The German name of the subfamily (eel goby) can lead to confusion with the white stripe eel goby ( Pholidichthys leucotaenia ), a marine fish that does not belong to the goby-like species.
features
The dorsal fins of the Amblyopinae are always connected by a membrane, sometimes also connected to the caudal and anal fin to form a continuous band. The pelvic fins are converted to a suction device for most Aalgrundeln. The regressed eyes are tiny, punctiform.
Eel gobies often live as mud and ground dwellers in the intertidal zone and retreat to caves in the silt at low tide . They are an average of 10 to 15 centimeters long, a species over 30 centimeters.
