Pomatoschistus refers to a genus of the goby-like (Gobiiformes). They are small fish that are only 3 to 10 centimeters long and are found mainly in coastal waters such as bays and estuaries of the Mediterranean , the eastern Atlantic and the Black Sea . The genus Pomatoschistus was established in 1864 by the American ichthyologist Theodore Nicholas Gill .
Way of life
Depending on the species, sand gobies can be found in sea water as well as in brackish and fresh water up to a depth of 20 meters. Most species live on a fine sand or gravel bottom, where they are optimally camouflaged by their sand color. Occasionally they can also be found in open water, 10 to 50 centimeters above the sea floor.
species
14 species of the genus Pomatoschistus are currently known. In 2008 , the new species Pomatoschistus montenegrensis was first described in the Morača , a river in central Montenegro . Due to their uniform sand color, the species of the genus Pomatoschistus can only be distinguished from one another very poorly, if at all.
