Franz Steindachner
Franz Steindachner (born November 11, 1834 in Vienna ; † December 10, 1919 there ) was an Austrian zoologist .
Life
Steindachner first studied law in Vienna before turning to the natural sciences in 1856 . He first dealt with fossil fish . Due to his excellent work, he was entrusted with the management of the fish collection of the Natural History Museum Vienna in 1860 . In the following year, after Leopold Fitzinger left , he also took over the collection of amphibians and reptiles . From 1898 until his death he was the director of the museum. Steindachner was also a student of Joseph Hyrtl .
Steindachner's first collecting trips took him to Spain , Portugal , the Canary Islands and Senegal .
Between 1859 and 1868 Steindachner published 55 ichthyological works with a total volume of almost 900 pages and thus became one of the most outstanding ichthyologists in a short time . In 1872 he visited the Galapagos Islands together with the American naturalist and former President of Harvard University Thomas Hill . In the 1890s he led the Austro-Hungarian deep-sea expeditions in the eastern Mediterranean , the Adriatic and the Red Sea . In 1892 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
The genus Steindachneridion from the family of the antenna catfish (Pimelodidae) and over 30 fish species, z. B. Steindachner's dwarf cichlid ( Apistogramma steindachneri ) are named after him.
