Gobioides is a genus of bony fish from the family Oxudercidae in the order of the goby-like that occurs in the coastal region of tropical seas. In German, the Gobioides species are also called eel gobies, but arenot particularly closeto the eel gobies of the subfamily Amblyopinae, and notat all closely relatedto the Indo-Pacific white-stripe eel goby ( Pholidichthys leucotaenia ).

Distribution and way of life

The distribution area of the genus is on the west coast of Africa from Senegal to the Democratic Republic of the Congo , on the Atlantic coast of the American double continent from South Carolina to Rio Grande do Sul ( Brazil ) and in the eastern Pacific from southern Mexico to northern Peru .

Gobioides species live mainly in brackish lagoons and river underflows over muddy grounds, hide in mud, under stones or create passages in the ground. They feed on detritus , microscopic algae, diatoms, and small invertebrates.

features

Gobioides species are 13 to 55.3 cm long and have a very elongated, laterally flattened body covered with small cycloid scales with 26 to 31 vertebrae and long dorsal and anal fins. The head is flattened, the jaws of unequal length. The eyes are small to tiny, their diameter does not even reach 10% of the length of the head. The upper mouth has 1 to 3 rows of teeth in the upper jaw and 1 to 4 in the lower jaw. The fish are whitish, gray or blue-gray in color, the underside yellowish to whitish. Small pores of the lateral line system form well-developed channels on the head.

The dorsal and anal fin are usually connected to the caudal fin by a fin membrane. The pelvic fins have grown together to form a suction disk. The caudal fin is long and shaped like a lance tip.
