The brachygobius ( Brachygobius ; latin brachys "small, short," Gobius "Grundel, gudgeon") are a South Asian genus of Oxudercidae within the Grundelartigen (Gobiiformes). The eight or nine species are found in India , mainland Southeast Asia , the Philippines , Sumatra , Kalimantan and Java . They live in fresh waters such as ponds and shallow ditches and in the brackish water of estuaries, lagoons and mangrove regions .

features

Gold ring gobies are 2 to 4.5 inches long. Their body is slightly elongated and round in cross section at the front and slightly flattened at the back. In a middle longitudinal row of scales (mLR) one counts 21 to 44 comb scales . The head is large and rounded, the eyes are wide apart. The second dorsal fin and anal fin are supported by a fin spine and six to nine soft rays. The coloration of all golden ringed gobies is quite similar and can only be used to little extent to determine the species. All have a light to honey yellow basic color and a black or dark brown, very variable banding pattern. The bandages can also be dissolved into stains. Pure black animals are also known.

Way of life

Golden ringed gobies live on the bottom of the water and feed on invertebrates such as insect larvae and small crustaceans. They are territorial and spawn in cavities under rocks. A clutch consists of 100 to 150 relatively large eggs. The clutch is guarded by the male. The fry hatch after 4 to 5 days with a length of 4 millimeters. At first they live free-swimming in the upper water layers and only later switch to the bottom life of the adult golden ringed gobies.
