The Als , also known as Dornbach in the upper reaches, also known as Alsbach or Alserbach , is a 10.55 kilometer long river in Vienna , which today is mostly run as a brook canal .
geography
geology
As the Wienerwaldbach, the Alserbach has the character of a low mountain range . Due to the impermeability of the subsoil, the water flow of the creek changes very quickly due to more intensive precipitation, so that short but strong floods can occur. The upper reaches of the Als are typically in the forest and are relatively steep with strong deep erosion.
course
The Als rises on the border with Lower Austria in the valley between Dahaberg and Steinerner Lahn. In this area, also called Dornbach , the river soon reaches Hernals and, running in a south-easterly direction to Amundsenstraße, forms a section of the district border between the municipal districts of Hernals and Penzing . Then the water turns to the west, follows the right side of the Neuwaldegger Straße and then flows on the edge of the Marswiese to the mouth of the Eckbach . The inlet structure into the brook canal is also located here. The stream originally flowed along Neuwaldegger Strasse, Alszeile , Richthausenstrasse , Rötzergasse and Jörgerstrasse . Here, on the border with the Währing district , the Als finally reached the Alsergrund district , on which it continued on Lazarettgasse . Here she was diverted from the Herzogspoint elevation to the north and followed Spitalgasse and Nussdorfer Strasse . At the intersection of Nussdorfer Strasse and Alserbachstrasse today , the Währinger Bach flows into the Als and the Als continued on its way eastward along Alserbachstrasse. The Als originally flowed into an arm of the Danube on the city side in the course of today's Liechtensteinstrasse (salt grit). After it silted up, however, the stream flowed into the Danube Canal at today's Friedensbrücke . Since 1902 the brook has been channeled into the right main collecting canal , whereby the overflow of the Als flows into the Danube Canal only after a heavy rain event.
history
There are different ways of deriving the name of the Als. Often the name is derived from the Celtic Alt , which can mean brook or cool brook. Other interpretations, however, the name could also come from the Old Slavic word Olša , which is translated as alder . The first documentary mention comes from the year 1044. After the Ottakringer brook was diverted for the construction of the Minorite monastery, an arm of the Als was branched off to the city of Vienna around 1200. Via Sensengasse and Währinger Strasse , the water was directed west of the Schottentor over the city moat into the city and then followed Schotten - and Herrengasse to the original bed of the Ottakringer Bach. The new Alsarm finally reached the Danube Canal through Strauchgasse and Tiefen Graben . Between 1430 and 1440, the newly formed Alsarm in the inner city was finally filled in and only watered the moat and the mill inside.
