“Mars at rest” by JM Fischer

The Marswiese is a green area in the 17th district of  Vienna , Hernals , Neuwaldegg district , on the edge of the Vienna Woods. It is part of the Schwarzenbergpark and houses the public sports center Marswiese of the Diocesan Sports Association Vienna. This offers football, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, an athletics facility and a climbing hall.

The monument "Resting Mars" is a sight. It is the Mars statue that was previously set up in Lacy's landscape garden at Neuwaldegg Castle . This sculpture, made by Johann Martin Fischer in 1774, is another copy of the ancient Ares Ludovisi motif , which was probably first used in the 4th century BC. It was picked up by the Greek sculptors Skopas or Lysipp and copied several times as early as Roman times.
