Stop at the Frauenfeld-Wil-Bahn with a view of the Murkart area

The Murkart area near Frauenfeld is a former factory site of the Salzmann-Däniker twisting mill (1900–1931) and the Dr. Emil Schlumpf (1939–1972). One of the last and highest tall industrial chimneys in the canton of Thurgau is located on the site ; it has not been in operation for a long time.

history

Cotton mill (1860–1889)

Hardly any more differentiated information can be found on the history of the use of the cotton mill . In 1866 the company employed 109 workers. In 1878 the factory under the management of Th. Schweizer employed 139 workers at the site. In 1889 the spinning mill was destroyed in a major fire. A hydropower plant has been housed in the northern part of the building since production began. The spinning machines were powered by water power.

Twisting (1900–1931)

The partially destroyed factory buildings were rebuilt and around 1900 a twisting mill started operations under the name Salzmann-Däniker & Cie. Over the years, the twisting mill employs around 60 to 120 workers. According to plans from 1900, the machine room was located in the low-rise building of the factory, in which 23 large spinning, twisting and package winding machines were housed. At the beginning, these machines were driven directly with water power via transmission lines. In addition to water and steam, electricity was also used as a form of energy from 1923 at the latest. A deep shaft was dug in the northern part of the building and a turbine was installed in the third basement. In this context, the building is likely to have been connected to the transformer station of the Frauenfeld power station north of the building. The packing room and cloakroom were located on the ground floor of the building. In 1931 the twisting mill was deleted from the factory directory.

Dyeing works Dr. Emil Schlumpf (1939–1972)

In 1939, the Dr. Emil Schlumpf & Co AG started operations at the site. The dye works worked on behalf of stocking factories in the near and far and dyed mainly cotton stockings . An employee of the company picked up stockings to be dyed from other stocking factories in a delivery truck every day and delivered the finished dyed stockings back to the respective companies. So no stockings were produced on site, only those were dyed.

There were several large dyeing basins (approx. 10 pieces) on the first floor of the building. There may also have been other dyeing baths in the western part of the building. The basins should have been around 1.5 m wide and 10 m long each. The stockings were hung on poles and immersed in the dye baths. After the dyeing process, the stockings were mechanically finished in the finish. Then the stockings had to be dried. In order to give the stockings a beautiful shape, they were pulled over wooden models in the molding shop. In addition to the stockings, other fabrics are also likely to have been colored. Three large water tanks (25,000 liters each) were installed above the hydropower plant so that the factory was not only dependent on the productivity of the spring water catchment used during dry periods. The Schlumpf family also lived on the site. The Dr. Emil Schlumpf & Co AG went bankrupt in 1972.

Interim use (since 1972)

High chimney

The area was completely empty from 1972 to 1978. After that, the area was sold several times and repeatedly used for other purposes. In 1992 the area was connected to the sewer system .

A small hydropower plant is also located on the Murkart area . In place of the old turbine, the Isento AG company (part of Alpiq Holding ), which is located above Frauenfeld an der Murg , is now almost in the same place . In 2008 it was completely renovated after a fire. Today it supplies electricity to more than 330 households in the region. At the weir, a fish ladder enables fish to migrate upstream in the Murg. By creating biotopes near the weir, Alpiq made a major contribution to the ecological upgrading of the area around the power plant.
