Bach canal is a technical term from hydraulic engineering and describes a vaulted watercourse whose spring water is used to flush and remove faecal and rainwater .

The Greek engineers already had the idea of ​​using streams to flush canals and building adequate flood protection through the construction . This is how the later canal system in Athens was created around an arched stream, the Eridanos . The use of brook channels also played an important role in the development of Rome . A drainage system that flowed into the Tiber was also used over time to remove human and animal faeces. The growth of Rome finally meant that more and more canals were connected to the receiving water , and the Bach Canal became the largest Roman collecting canal ( Cloaca Maxima ).

As a rule, the transformation of a brook into a brook canal begins by building up the banks. After that, the watercourse is initially partially arched in parallel to the urban development, later completely arched and used to drain off faecal water.
