The Mühlviertel Nature Park (until 2005: Rechberg Nature Park ) is the only nature park in the Mühlviertel and one of a total of three in Upper Austria with areas in four Mühlviertel communities. While Bad Zell belongs to the LEADER region Mühlviertler Alm , Allerheiligen im Mühlkreis , Rechberg and St. Thomas am Blasenstein belong to the Leader region Strudengau .

In the nature park there are 13 of the 46 designated natural monuments in the Perg district , the Großdöllnerhof open-air museum and the nursery of a mouse- eared colony in the attic of the Rechberg parish church .

Expansion and emergence

The park, designated as a landscape protection area, extends over several non-contiguous areas with a total of more than ten square kilometers (1046 hectares) in the districts of Perg and Freistadt .

Shares in the nature park are located in the municipalities of Rechberg, Allerheiligen, Bad Zell and St. Thomas. The part of the nature park located in the Naar valley also belongs to the Natura 2000 area Waldaist-Naarn .

As early as 1972, the municipality of Rechberg pursued the nature park project with the aim of preserving the scenic and cultural characteristics of the region. In 1995 , the 2nd  European year for nature conservation , concrete steps were taken that led to the ordinance of the Rechberg Nature Park with an area of 3.17 square kilometers in 1996. Until the Obsthügelland Nature Park was founded in 2003, it was the only nature park in Upper Austria. The extension to the neighboring communities of Allerheiligen, Bad Zell and St. Thomas am Blasenstein to the Mühlviertel Nature Park took place in 2005.

Only the partially non-contiguous properties shown in the relevant provincial ordinance are landscape protection areas within the meaning of Section 11 of the Upper Austrian Nature Conservation Act 2001 - the concept of the nature park is integrated in Upper Austria in that of the landscape protection area. Other Upper Austrian nature parks are the Obst-Hügel-Land Nature Park and the Attersee-Traunsee Nature Park .

Natural monuments, protected plants and animals

The following well-known natural features in the Mühlviertel Nature Park were declared natural monuments in accordance with the Upper Austrian Nature and Landscape Act 1982 .

  • The Falkenstein natural monument is located in the Naar valley in the municipality of Allerheiligen in the Mühlkreis and is a rock tower that towers about 100 meters and is visible from the Naar valley.
  • The mushroom is located in the municipality of Rechberg and is a rock formation, a so-called rocking stone , that was created by wool sack weathering , which is a landmark of the municipality of Rechberg and is also included in the logo of the Mühlviertel Nature Park.
  • The natural monument gypsy wall with sacrificial table is located in the municipality of St. Thomas am Blasenstein and is a rock formation with a shape that served as a model for megalithic structures in parts of Europe and was used as cult sites for thousands of years .

Furthermore, some Pechölsteine , the rock formation on the Plenkerberg , the Elefantenstein , the Pammerhöhe hilltop and the Fuchsmauern in Rechberg as well as the Wackelsteine, Pechölsteine and Einsiedlersteine in St. Thomas am Blasenstein are designated as natural monuments.

Of the plants protected in Upper Austria, the broad-leaved orchid (or broad- leaved finger orchid ), the fire lily , the fever clover and the round-leaf sundew can be found in the nature park .

The nursery of a mouse- eared colony is located in the attic of the parish church in Rechberg , where they spend the time of pregnancy , birth , rearing and suckling of the young from the end of March / beginning of April to the end of August / beginning of September . The approximately 400-strong colony has been observed by employees of the Austrian coordination center for bat protection and research since 2004 and appears to be stable.

Großdöllnerhof open-air museum

The Großdöllnerhof open-air museum is an approximately four hundred year old Mühlviertler Dreiseithof , typical of the region , which was managed on a full-time basis until 1968 and was purchased by the municipality of Rechberg in 1994 and expanded and converted into a museum and event center. The building houses a permanent exhibition on the subject of folk medicine and superstition , which is supplemented by special exhibitions that change every year and, on a case-by-case basis, show crafts.

Nature Park Association

The nature park idea originated in 1972 and in 1983 led to the appointment of the Rechberg district manager Friedrich Jahn as managing director. He campaigned for the establishment of the Rechberg Nature Park and achieved its recognition in 1996 through an ordinance of the Upper Austrian provincial government.

In 2001 a natural park association was founded, the first managing director of which was Tobias Hundertpfund from 2002 to 2008. During his term of office, the extension of the nature park to the nature park Mühlviertel fell. His successor in 2008 was Karin Andrik, who was followed by Barbara Derntl in 2009. The board of the association is made up of the mayors or vice mayors of the four nature park communities.

According to its mission statement, the Mühlviertel Nature Park Association is intended to serve as a regional development tool and strive for the sustainable development of an ecologically, economically and socially intact living space and the purpose of the association is described accordingly in the statutes.

One of the better-known and controversial projects among the population was the traveling sheep farm in 2007, which was discontinued after a few months. The hiking trail concept from 2007 to 2013, which aims to improve the quality of fewer hiking trails and to network the hiking trails within the nature park communities, is more sustainable. A current project deals with the development and marketing of nature park products.
