history

The Mühlviertler Alm working group was founded in 1993 on the basis of a regional collaboration between the eight municipalities of the Unterweißbach judicial district that began in the 1970s and originally covered an area of around 355 square kilometers with 13,335 inhabitants (2001 census).

After joining the EU , the ARGE was defined as a LEADER region from 1994 to 2000 and as a Leader Plus region from 2000 to 2006 and transferred to the Mühlviertler Alm association.

In 1995, the region was one of the structurally weakest regions in Austria due to its location away from the major conurbations and major traffic routes. Problem areas were the high share of agriculture as the only source of income, the lack of alternative jobs in the region combined with the necessity to commute daily or weekly to workplaces, mostly in the central area of Linz and the surrounding area, which is an average of 35 kilometers away. Apprentices and students had to leave their hometown early on, at least for the duration of their training. Overall, the number of inhabitants in the eight founding communities has continuously decreased since 1971 from 13,993 to 13,271 in 2009. If the municipalities only added in 2003 and 2008 were included, the population decreased from 18,285 to 18,164 inhabitants (2001 census).

As part of the Agenda 21 regional development process, a concept based on the participation of the population was developed from 2001 in three regional future workshops , which was published in a future book.

In 2003 the regional association was expanded to include St. Georgen am Walde in the Perg district . In 2004 the region received the Upper Austrian Provincial Environment Prize, and further awards followed. The region has been describing itself as a living region since 2006. With the inclusion of the municipality of Bad Zell in 2008, part of the Mühlviertel Nature Park also belonged to the region .

Association and tourism association

The as club organized association Mühlviertler Alm - Association for Regional u. Tourism development employs a full-time managing director who is responsible for the areas of municipalities (ten Mühlviertler Alm communities), tourism (Mühlviertler Alm tourism association and Königswiesen tourism association), gastronomy (Mühlviertler Almwirte), agriculture (Mühlviertler Alm farmers, local farmers, projects), the Mühlviertler Alm riding association (regional riding clubs and riding businesses).

The Mühlviertler Alm tourism association as a public corporation has 8 member municipalities, as the municipalities of Königswiesen and Bad Zell still have their own tourism associations (as of 2013). Both the club and the association are based in the Mühlviertel Almbüro in Unterweißbach . In the course of the restructuring of the regional tourism organizations, the Mühlviertler Alm tourism association will be merged into the new "Mühlviertel Alm Freistadt Tourism Association" (the association for regional and tourism development remains unchanged).

Other members are representatives of working groups / projects (youth petrol station, quality of life in old age, regional Agenda 21, ...) as well as committed citizens of the Mühlviertler Alm.

economy

In 1995, the region's economic strength was the lowest in relation to the Upper Austrian average, measured by the financial strength of the municipalities. Despite the relatively large distance to the economic and work centers in the central area of Linz, almost a fifth of the population commutes there.

The local small businesses mainly serve the local supply, Sonnberg Biofleisch (Unterweissenbach) is one of the largest private companies with 55 employees. The farms have been run as part-time businesses for many years and are characterized by natural, ecological management, primarily in the dairy industry . The ratio of 24 percent organic farms to conventional farms is at the forefront throughout Upper Austria. Due to the abundance of forests, forestry plays an important role. The proportion of forest areas is increasing and is already around 45 percent.

The region has numerous different intact natural spaces and landscape elements. The Tourism plays a minor role, the focus is on the recreational tourism , and the tourist offer apart from ruins and a raised bog is modest. The part of the region in the Naar valley between Unterweißbach and Bad Zell belongs to the Natura 2000 area Waldaist-Naarn. The part of the Naar valley located in the municipality of Bad Zell is also part of the Mühlviertel Nature Park .

Sprachalm

In 1955, the foundation stone was laid in Unterweissenbach for a relationship between the region and the Eastern European economic and linguistic area that had lasted for more than fifty years. International language seminars and specialist seminars are held in the region every year. The work begun by Georg Dox (* 1905 in Petersburg, † 1984) in Unterweissenbach was taken over by the Komino (Communication in Eastern Languages) based in Vienna in 1995 and continued until 2005. The Sprachalm LEADER project has been coordinated by the Mühlviertler Alm since 2006. The offer particularly includes summer seminars for Russian, Czech and German on the one hand as language intensive seminars, on the other hand also for beginners and advanced learners and can be expanded to other languages if required.

Horse kingdom Mühlviertler Alm

The Mühlviertler Alm has a 700-kilometer network of bridle paths with 50 horse rest stops and rider hostels, which offers day rides as well as trail riding. The companies have undergone a classification and use one to four horseshoes to describe the quality level achieved. The horseshoe is a protected trademark of the region.

Mühlviertler Alm pasture goose

In 1992 a farmer in Mönchdorf (Königswiesen) became the first Austrian farmer to start keeping goose again. Six farms in the region now produce around a thousand free-range geese per year.
