Castle and palace trail
The Castles and Palaces Trail ( Zemská cesta in Czech ) is an approximately 215 km long long- distance hiking trail through the cultural landscapes of the Mühlviertel ( Austria ) and southern Bohemia ( Czech Republic ). The cross-border themed trail opens up a total of 19 castles and palaces.
Routing
The long-distance hiking trail connects the Danube town of Grein with Velešín in the Czech Republic. In the southern part, the path divides into a south and north route (which can also be walked together as a circular route). Along the northern route it leads through the communities of Grein, Klam , Bad Kreuzen , St. Thomas am Blasenstein , Pierbach , Schönau im Mühlkreis , Gutau , Kefermarkt , Lasberg , Freistadt , Rainbach im Mühlkreis , Windhaag near Freistadt , Dolní Dvořiště , Bujanov , Benešov nad Černou , Kaplice , Soběnov , Netřebice , Svatý Jan nad Malší and Velešín. With the southern route, instead of the municipalities of Pierbach and Schönau, the municipalities of Windhaag bei Perg , Rechberg , Bad Zell and Tragwein are reached. Upwards there are almost 4800 meters of altitude to overcome and downwards a good 4930 meters.
Castles and palaces along the way
The castles and palaces are sorted by region (Upper Austria, South Bohemia) and name:
History of origin
The first route variant was created in the 1980s. At that time the route only ran on the Austrian side from Grein to Freistadt, with Saxen , Reichenstein and Liebenau also being included by branch routes. In 1994 Fritz Fellner, curator of the Mühlviertel Castle Museum in Freistadt, and Ingrid Wiederschwinger brought out the right hiking guide with a map. The fall of the Iron Curtain and the EU funding opportunities ultimately provided a basis for further developing the hiking trail across borders. In the ETZ AT-CZ 2007-2013 program, a cross-border project “Castle and Palaces Route / Zemská cesta” was created, which included the castles of the “Hrady na Malší” association. The path was subsequently signposted and some castles were structurally upgraded. In 2017, under the lead partnership of the Mühlviertler Alm Association, another project was submitted within the framework of the Interreg VA Austria - Czech Republic (ATCZ91) program, which was approved in the same year. In addition to further investments in some castles (Pořešín, Tichá, Prandegg and Kreuzen), an audio guide (for all 19 objects), a hiking guide, a website and marketing activities are being implemented.
