history

overall view

Beneschau was founded in the second half of the 13th century by Beneš from Michalovice, from which the place name is derived. It was first mentioned in writing in 1332 when the original St. Jakob Chapel was converted into a church. Johann Georg von Schwanberg ( Jan Jiří ze Švamberka ) granted the place the privilege of brewing beer and a fair on Easter Tuesday and St. Jacob's Day. In 1383 Beneschau was raised to the market, whereby it received further rights. In 1387 Ulrich I von Rosenberg acquired Beneschau and linked it with his lordship of Gratzen . In 1423 he confirmed the previous privileges and also granted the right to miles . The town hall and a hospital were first mentioned in 1553. In 1570 Jakob Krčín von Jelčany built a brewery and in 1594 a new Renaissance town hall was built on the town square . In 1881 it was elevated to the status of a city, which was now called the German Beneschau. In the 19th century the place lost its original appearance due to several fires.

In 1885 a six-class school and an agricultural training school were built. In addition to agriculture, mills, saws, hammer smiths and pottery as well as a wood wool and timber trade were of economic importance.

In 1900, German Beneschau had 1,982 inhabitants. 1,969 of them were German and 3 Czech.

After 1945 the German residents were expelled and the Czech name was changed in 1948 from Německý Benešov to the current name, which refers to the river Černá . In 1995 the historical part of Benešov was declared a monument protection zone.
