history

Křemže was first mentioned in 1266 as "Zmilenburch". For the year 1281 the spelling "Zmilenberg", 1364 "Krzemz", 1369 "Krzemsa" and 1447 "Křemže" is proven. It was owned by the Dubenský von Chlum family, a branch of the Bavor von Strakonitz family . In 1318 the Dubenský von Chlum divided into the family branches "von Chlum" ( z Chlumce ) and "von Krems" ( z Křemže ).

Smil von Krems built a castle instead of the original fortress and his descendants called themselves "Smil von Krems" ( Smilové z Křemže ). The last of this family branch was Jan Smil von Krems ( Jan Smil z Křemže ). As a supporter of the Hussites , he came into opposition with Ulrich II von Rosenberg , who held him captive for some time in the early 1420s. Presumably because he was after Jan Smil's possessions, he accused him of forging documents in 1439 and took him prisoner again. Although Jan Smil left his possessions to the Rosenberger in July 1444 , he was still executed in Krumau in 1447 . In 1451 Ulrich von Rosenberg sold Krems Castle to the brothers Přibík and Oldřich von Chlum. In 1547 it was owned by the Častolár von Dlouhá Ves family. In 1678 it came to the Goldenkron Monastery and, after the monastery was dissolved in 1785, it came back to the Český Krumlov rule, which at that time belonged to the Schwarzenbergs . In 1840, 15 houses on the market square were destroyed in a fire. In 1863 it was elevated to the status of a city, which took on the coat of arms of the Lords of Chlum. In the middle of the 19th century, Krems formed a municipality that belonged to the judicial district of Krumau in the Krumau district .

After the Munich Agreement, Křemže remained with Czechoslovakia and from 1939 to 1945 belonged to the Budweis Political District in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia . After the Second World War, Křemže came back to re-established Czechoslovakia ; 1946 took place the expulsion of the German population. On December 1, 2006 Křemže received the status of a Městys .

An international competition for young pianists has been held annually in the Křemže Town Hall since 2005.
