The České Budějovice – Černý Kříž railway is a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic , the two sections of which were originally built by the Austrian Local Railway Company (ÖLEG) and the United Bohemian Forest Local Railways as a state-guaranteed local railway . It branches off at the Rožnov junction ("odbočka") from the Sankt Valentin – České Budějovice railway line and runs via Český Krumlov ( Krummau ) and Horní Planá ( Oberplan ) to Černý Kříž ( Black Cross ). There is a connection to the Číčenice – Nové Údolí railway line .

According to a decree of the Czech government, the line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

The concession for the local railway from Budweis (Pořič) via Krumau to Salnau was awarded to the ÖLEG on August 30, 1884. Part of the concession was the obligation to start construction of the line immediately and to finish it within two and a half years. The duration of the concession was set at 90 years. On November 19, 1891, the route from Budweis to Gojau was officially opened. One day later, on November 20, 1891, the scheduled train service began. The operation was carried out by the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB) for the account of the ÖLEG. The remaining route to Salnau was opened on July 4, 1892.

Boršov nad Vltavou railway station (2009)

On January 1st, 1894, the ÖLEG was nationalized. From then on, their infrastructure was part of the kkStB network.

On February 11, 1908, the United Bohemian Forest Local Railways received the concession for the extension of the existing line from Salnau to Schwarzes Kreuz and from Wallern to the border in Neuthal . The new route was opened on June 12, 1910. There was now a continuous connection from Budweis to Passau .

In 1912 the timetable of the local railway indicated three continuous pairs of 2nd and 3rd class passenger trains. Others operated on sections of the route. They needed about four hours for the 88-kilometer route.

After the collapse of Austria-Hungary in October 1918, management was transferred to the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD). With the nationalization of the United Bohemian Forest Local Railways, the infrastructure from Salnau to Schwarzes Kreuz also belonged to the ČSD network from January 1, 1925.

Nová Pec railway station (2011)

From the 1930s onwards, traffic, especially on the less frequented section between Kajov and Schwarzes Kreuz, was handled with modern motorized trains that were tied through to Wallern. For most train connections, travelers now had to change trains in Kajov. The winter timetable of 1937/38 recorded up to seven 3rd class passenger train pairs. The travel time in the Budweis – Schwarzes Kreuz route was now a little over three hours.

After the Sudetenland was annexed to Germany in autumn 1938, the section between Krummau and Schwarzes Kreuz came to the Deutsche Reichsbahn , Reichsbahndirektion Regensburg . The remainder of the route remaining in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia was operated by the Protectorate Railways of Bohemia and Moravia (ČMD-BMB). In the imperial course book the connection was included as course book route 426t Wallern (Böhmerw) –Schwarzes Kreuz – Krummau (Moldau) . After the end of the Second World War, the entire line came back to the ČSD.

Between 1950 and 2015, part of the route with the stations Polná na Šumavě and Polečnice was in the area of ​​the Boletice military training area .

At the end of the 1950s, the route between Černá v Pošumaví and Nová Pec was re-routed as a result of the construction of the Lipno dam (Údolní nádrž Lipno). The almost 13 kilometer long new line went into operation on April 20, 1958.

On January 1, 1993, the line was transferred to the newly founded České dráhy (ČD) in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia . Since 2003 it has been part of the network of the state infrastructure operator Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC).

In the 2019 timetable, the České Budějovice – Černý Kříž route is served by passenger trains every two hours, most of which are connected to Nové Údolí. Other trains run between České Budějovice and Česky Krumlov or Kajov.

Since December 10, 2017, travel has been operated by GW Train Regio .

Vehicle use

The kkStB used locomotives of the 97 and 178 series on the route , which were financed by the local railway company.

Until 2017, passenger traffic was handled with the railcars of the ČD series 810 and their modernized version of the ČD series 814 . In times of higher passenger volumes, locomotive hauled passenger trains were also used. They consisted of a diesel locomotive of the ČD series 749 or 754 and Görlitz double-decker cars .

Since December 2017, with the change of operation to GW Train Regio , low-floor RegioSprinter (654 series) have been running on the routes in the Bohemian Forest.
