history

Hořice was first mentioned in a document in 1274 and was then owned by Heinrich von Amschelberg ( Jindřich z Kosové Hory ), who ceded the place to the Witigonen in 1281 . The early Gothic church of St. Katharina was built around 1250. Since 1290 it has belonged to the Hohenfurth monastery . In 1375 it was raised to the status of a town, which the Abbot of Hohenfurth granted market rights in 1549. During the Thirty Years' War it was plundered by the Swedes, and from the middle of the 19th century the municipality belonged to the judicial district of Krumlov in the Krumlov district .

Höritz Passion Play

Höritz was best known for the Passion Plays , which were performed between 1818 and 1948, but whose tradition is said to go back to the 13th century. The text for the first performance in the local inn was written by the weaver Paul Gröllhesl, who used a model from the Capuchin Martin Cochem from 1682. The games were initially performed by laypeople. The Passion Play has been organized by the German Böhmerwaldbund since 1890 . They were filmed several times, including in 1895 for the American company Hurd. During the Second World War, the Passion Play in Höritz was banned by the National Socialists and the theater building was used as a warehouse. After the war, the tradition was briefly revived, but the communists now endeavored to quickly liquidate the Passion Play. After 1948, the theater building served as a sheepfold and straw store, later the wooden building was demolished and the masonry parts of the building and the pilgrimage church were blown up in 1966.

After the political change , the tradition of the Passion Play was resumed on June 29, 1993. In the first four years there were 36 performances, which were attended by almost 10,000 spectators from Europe. Jesus was played by the painter and sculptor Frantisek Hladky, a trained carpenter. Hořice na Šumavě has been a minority town since March 16, 2017.
