The Schwarzau (Czech Černá , formerly Švarcava ) is a tributary of the Maltsch in Austria and the Czech Republic .

It rises at 823  m above sea level. A. in the Freiwald am Talerberg southwest of the Nebelstein ( 1017  m ) east of the Schwarzau district of the municipality of Moorbad Harbach in the Gmünd district in Lower Austria . The river, also known as the Schwarzaubach in its upper reaches, runs to the northwest and crosses to the Czech Republic after less than three kilometers below Schwarzau, the only Austrian town on the Schwarzaubach . There it is dammed in a small pond near the abandoned village of Zlatá Ktiš ( Gold Table ).

On the further course of the Schwarzau are Žofín ( Sophienthal ), Černé Údolí ( Schwarzthal ), Třebíčko ( Sankt Gabriela ), Benešov nad Černou ( German Beneschau ), Ličov ( Litschau ), Velké Skaliny ( Groß Gallein ) and Zikeš.

To the northeast of Kaplice near Přisečno ( Pfaffenberg ) the Schwarzau flows into the Maltsch after 29.3 km. It has a catchment area of ​​128.167 km².

The Schwarzau has been dammed south of Soběnov ( Oemau ) at the foot of the Hühnergebirge since 1925 . The Soběnov Dam ( Soběnovská přehrada ) is used to generate electricity. The dam broke during the floods of 2002 and has since been restored.
