The Maltsch as a border river between Austria and the Czech Republic

The Maltsch (Czech Malše ) is a right tributary of the Vltava in the Czech Republic and Upper Austria .

Basic information

The entire catchment area is 979.1 km², the total length 96 kilometers, of which 89.5 are in the Czech Republic or as a border river. The average amount of water at the last level before the estuary is 7.26 m³ / s.

River course

The Maltsch rises in Austria in the Gratzener Bergland on the northeastern slopes of the Viehberg in the village of Sandl . With a length of 22 kilometers it forms a natural border with the Czech Republic . At Dolní Dvořiště it finally turns towards the Czech Republic and flows through Rychnov nad Malší , Kaplice , Římov and Doudleby to České Budějovice ( Budweis ). Here it flows into the center of the city at an altitude of 385 m above sea level. to the Vltava.

particularities

The Římov drinking water reservoir is located on the river.

Flood of wood

On the Maltsch there was probably the oldest wood flood in the Mühlviertel, the oldest documented documentation dates from 1685. The wood was swept from the Freiwald in the direction of Leopoldschlag and Unterhaid and transported from there to the north. From the 1830s onwards, this was done with the help of the horse-drawn railway . The wood came mainly from the areas around Windhaag , Leopoldschlag and Zettwing , which alternately received the privilege for the first flood of the year. It is uncertain whether the flood was in regular operation, as the wood drift was very difficult due to the lack of alluvial ponds, the low gradient and the low flow of water in the river. The flood is likely to have lay fallow for a long time. It is therefore assumed that the last such flood took place in 1842.
