The Chicken Mountains ( Slepičí hory in Czech ) is a small mountain range in southern Bohemia. It is located between Trhové Sviny and Kaplice , approx. 8 km from both cities, in the Okres Český Krumlov and is separated from the Gratzener mountainous region by the valley of the Schwarzau ( Černá ) .

The mountains have a north-south extension of 10 km and from east to west of 5 km. It forms the eastern boundary of the Kaplitzer Furche ( Kaplická brázda ) through which the Maltsch flows . Its highest point is the Kohout ( Hahn ) with 869 m.

The Hühnergebirge is only sparsely populated, only a few farms remain from the settlement of Daleké Popelice ( Dalleken ). Surrounding communities are Soběnov ( Oemau ), Besednice ( Bessenitz ), Slavče ( Slabs ) and Benešov nad Černou . The mountains are part of the Soběnovská vrchovina nature park ( Oemauer Bergland ), which has been intended to preserve the forest and meadow landscape as well as the historic hydraulic engineering systems on the Schwarzau since 1995.

Two particularly worthy of protection areas were also declared nature reserves in 1995. These are:

  • the beech population on the southwest slope of Ševcova hora ( Schusterberg ) with an area of ​​8.33 ha
  • the flower beech forest on the eastern scree slope of the Vysoký kámen ( hen ) with an area of ​​3.21 ha; it is also a retreat for the eagle owl

The natural monument (PP) Besednické vltavíny ( Bessenitzer Moldavite ), also declared in 1995, covers an area of ​​28 ha and includes the meadow and forest landscape with detached individual farms on the eastern outskirts of Besednice. In the reserve there is an old clay pit, which is considered to be a rich place where Moldavites were found .
