Mzimba is a 1,400 meter high city with 26,096 inhabitants (2018 census) in the Northern Region of Malawi . It is located on the Lilongwe - Mzuzu road and is the capital of the district of the same name , which has an area of 10,430 km² and a population of 610,944.

Mzimba was once a center of the Ngoni , but has steadily lost its importance since 1940. Some of the Ngoni had fled this far from the brutal wars of the Zulu chief Shaka (1787–1828). Before the mining migration to the Republic of South Africa ended in the 1980s, Mzimba was a recruiting focus for guest workers there. These contacts last to this day and are mainly reflected in the range of goods.

Especially in the west of the Mzimba district, the level of education of the people is higher than in the rest of Malawi. The district has consistently recorded high economic growth rates. Mzimba is the center of Malawi's informal economy.

The district is the largest in Malawi and essentially a plateau at about 1200 meters above sea level, from which the south-north-running chain of the Viphya Mountains protrudes, to those from south to north the Champhila with 1820 meters, the Kamwe with 1809 Meters, the Chikangawa with 1906 meters and the Mphamphala with 1954 meters are the highest. The Viphya forest is believed to be the largest ever planted by humans. The timber industry therefore occupies a central position in this district. In the north of the district is the Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve , which is shared with the neighboring district of Rumphi . An important city of the district besides Mzimba is Ekendeti . The district itself is strongly influenced by agriculture and lives from the cultivation of maize, tobacco and cotton.

Mzimba has an airfield, good primary and secondary schools, a hospital and is connected to the national power grid.
