Ekwendi is a town about 20 km west of Mzuzu , in the Mzimba district of Malawi . It is one of the busiest and largest in the northern region of Malawi. Ekwendi lies on the west side of the Viphya Mountains and was founded by Scottish missionaries. There is the oldest church in Malawi, which belongs to the Malawian branch of the Scottish Church.
Ekenkeni is surrounded by tobacco fields. The district's population has the highest HIV / AIDS infection rate in Malawi, mainly because it is a main stopping place for truck drivers who drive as far as Tanzania and Kenya .
Ekendeti has a hospital run by the Presbyterian Church and largely funded by the US and Scotland. The language of the people in and around Ekendeti is Tumbuka , but the other languages of Malawi are also spoken here, as more and more people from other parts of the country are settling in this area.
