Hohe Wand is a community with 1402 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Wiener Neustadt-Land district in Lower Austria . It was created in 1971 from the union of the former municipalities of Maiersdorf and Stollhof.

geography

Hohe Wand is located in the industrial district in Lower Austria. The area of the municipality covers 24.6 km². 52.98 percent of the area is forested. The Hohe Wand Nature Park is located in the municipality .

history

The Stollhof depot in the Hohe Wand community was discovered in 1864 by a shepherd at an altitude of 700–800 m above Stollhof. It is located in the Natural History Museum Vienna .

Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg , which was the main town for the entire north-east Noricum . Later under the Romans, today's places of the municipality of Hohe Wand were then in the province of Pannonia .

Maiersdorf

The former municipality of Maiersdorf was mentioned in a document at the foundation of the Rein monastery in 1128. During the Turkish invasions in 1529 and 1683, the population fled to the fortified church and the caves of the Hohe Wand. During the French Wars from 1805 to 1809 the place was sacked. From 1870 to 1970 Maiersdorf was an independent municipality.

According to the 2001 census data , 85.7% of the population were Roman Catholic and 2.3% Protestant . 1.1% were Muslims , 0.5% belonged to Orthodox churches . 9.2% of the population had no religious denomination.

politics

The municipalities of Maiersdorf and Stollhof were merged in 1971 to form the newly founded municipality of Hohe Wand. Karl Spatling was the first joint mayor in 1971.

In 1990 the members were distributed as follows: 15 ÖVP and 4 SPÖ; until 2020 , the situation had changed: there were now 11 of the People's Party, 4 from the Independent Citizens List New, 2 Green, one from the Social Democratic Party and one from the Freedom Party.

Culture and sights

Romanesque-Gothic parish church in Maiersdorf

Parish church Maiersdorf

The fortified church , visible from afar , was built on a rock terrace in front of the Hohe Wand and is surrounded by the cemetery. The sacred building is a Romanesque hall church from the 12th century and St. Consecrated to John. Since it was a defensive refuge, the nave was increased by one storey in the 14th century. Maiersdorf was a branch of the mother parish Muthmannsdorf until 1783; in the year it was raised to the independent parish and first by the landlord (the Neukloster in Wiener Neustadt) and since 1881 by priests from the Stift Heiligenkreuz care.

Engelbertkirche Hohe Wand

Built in 1934/35 as a religious monument of the Fatherland Front for the murdered Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss .

economy

There were 53 non-agricultural workplaces in 2001, agricultural and forestry operations 71 according to the 1999 survey. According to the 2001 census, the number of people in employment in the place of residence was 613. In 2001, the activity rate was 47.52 percent.

Infrastructure

The Red Cross has a local office in Maiersdorf.
There are volunteer fire brigades in Maiersdorf, in Netting and in Stollhof.
A new community center with community office, mountain rescue and fire brigade is being built in Maiersdorf based on a design by the Hrabal architectural office.
