BW

Felixdorf is a market town in the Wiener Neustadt-Land district in Lower Austria with 4,359 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).

geography

The market town of Felixdorf is located in the southern industrial district in Steinfeld, around 10 km north of Wiener Neustadt in Lower Austria. At 2.48 square kilometers, it is the fourth smallest municipality in Lower Austria in terms of area. 10.66 percent of the area is forested.

There are no other cadastral communities apart from Felixdorf . Felixdorf Markt is the only village and the only settlement name.

The southern municipal boundary runs partly along a side branch of the Tirolerbach . The main course of the Piesting flows along the northern edge of the municipality , the water of which drives the turbine of a small hydropower plant just west of the Mohrstrasse bridge. The weir system connected to the power station divides the Piesting into two side arms, between which there is an island completely overgrown with alluvial forest. Just before the bridge of the southern railway, under which the Piesting flows at the northwestern end of the municipality, both side arms meet again.

Dense, natural alluvial forest grows along the entire course of the stream, which has become rare in the southern Vienna Basin. Parts of this forest have already been the subject of local politics several times, land reallocations should enable the community to expand. On the other hand, a movement formed which ultimately led to the formation of the Association for the Protection of the Riparian Forest and the Environment in Felixdorf .

history

Kuk artillery barracks (1902: barracks for the shooting test commission )

Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg .

Later under the Romans, today's Felixdorf was then in the province of Pannonia .

The municipality of Felixdorf is part of the Steinfeld and originally belonged to the municipality of Wiener Neustadt . In order to use this area, the town of Felixdorf was founded in 1821 on the initiative of the mayor of Wiener Neustadt , Felix Mießl . The settlement should originally have been called "Franzensdorf" in honor of Emperor Franz I. But since it was doubted that the settlement was viable, this request was rejected and the settlement was named after the founder Felixdorf. The name "Franzensdorf" was later given to a settlement near Groß-Enzersdorf .

On January 1, 1889, Felixdorf, which until then had belonged to the municipality of Wiener Neustadt, became an independent municipality.

Among other things, the 30.5 cm M.11 mortar was shot in at the Felixdorf artillery firing range in 1911 .

On the night of February 5 to 6, 1921, an express train coming from Italy collided with a freight train in Felixdorf station during heavy snowfall. Seven travelers died and 14 were seriously injured.

In 1940, at the suggestion of Hermann Oberth, a rocket test site was built in Felixdorf .

religion

Felixdorf has a Roman Catholic parish , a Protestant church and a mosque.

53.5% of the population are Roman Catholic , 17.0% belong to Islam , 6.5% are Protestant . 19.5% are without religious beliefs. After Waldegg, Felixdorf is the Austrian municipality with the second highest proportion of Muslims in the 2001 census.

Remarks

  1. The shooting range east of Sollenau, which is still known today, but has since been officially renamed the Steinfeld Schießversuchsplatz, has never been part of the Felixdorf municipal area. Its name is largely due to three circumstances: after the founding of the local community Felixdorf, the naming of the heather area of the Steinfeld as Felixdorfer Haide , which settled in Felixdorf (Bahnstrasse 2; from 1902: barracks for the shooting test commission ) from the middle of the 19th century to 1945 military administration of the shooting range as well as the post office, according to which the Felixdorf post office ( post code 2603) is also a delivery office for the communities of Ebenfurth and Matzendorf-Hölles . The Felixdorf shooting range ( ) is part of the Haschendorf cadastral community of the political municipality of Ebenfurth, its postal address is, according to DKM (Hasch) endorf ( sic! ) , Großmittler Straße 20, 2603 Felixdorf . - (Ad barracks from :) The barracks in Felixdorf .
