history
Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg .
An early to Middle La Tène cemetery with bodies and cremations was excavated in the Brunn district on the Schneebergbahn. The individual graves were partly covered with stone packings. In the grave of a Celtic warrior, sheet metal fittings in the Cheshire Cat style were found as grave goods .
Under the Romans, today's Bad Fischau-Brunn was then in the province of Pannonia .
Fischau was first mentioned in a document in 1130. The current market community was created in 1969 by merging the previously independent communities of Brunn an der Schneebergbahn and Bad Fischau.
Finds prove that people lived in the Bad Fischau-Brunn community area as early as the fifth millennium BC. Traces of the prehistoric inhabitants can also be found in the Bronze Age . A few centuries before Christ, the Celts invaded here . They had a considerable settlement on the Malleiten pottery . The first place name " Viscaia " goes back to them.
The Romans came to the area around the birth of Christ . They settled here on the important military and trade route to Vindobona (Vienna). Germanic peoples ousted the Romans in the 5th century and the migration of peoples began. Avars and Slavs settled here for a long time until Charlemagne drove them out in the 8th century and established two border marks. Bad Fischau-Brunn belonged to the northernmost part of Carantania (from which Carinthia and Styria later emerged) and was looked after by the church from Salzburg. In 865 a baptistery and a hospice were built at "Fiscere".
Documentary evidence of Fischau and Brunn is only available from the 12th century, the castles in Fischau and Brunn are believed to date from this time. The mint was moved from Neunkirchen to Fischau in this century, which made Fischau a market and gained some political significance. In the wars between the Babenberg Jasomirgott and the Styrian Duke Ottokar IV. Fischau was burned down in 1175. At the end of the 15th century the Magyars invaded , later the Turks raged here . At the beginning of the 18th century, Prince Esterhazy had the palace rebuilt in baroque style; a great earthquake (1768) caused great damage to the palace and the rectory; it was rebuilt and renovated in 1798.
It is believed that the place name Fischau is of Celtic origin. It has come down to us in different spellings:
- 805 "Fiskaha"
- 1151 "Vischa"
- 1277 "Uischere"
and was taken over by a river named for its abundance of fish. The additional designation "bath" was awarded to the community in 1929.
