Weikersdorf am Steinfelde is a municipality with 1068 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Wiener Neustadt-Land district in Lower Austria .
geography
Weikersdorf am Steinfelde is located in the south of the industrial district in Lower Austria. As the name suggests, the community extends over the Steinfeld plain at the foot of the Hohe Wand. Their area covers 14.22 square kilometers. 44.84 percent of the area is forested.

history
Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg , which was the main town for the entire north-east Norikum.
Later under the Romans, today's Weikersdorf was then in the province of Pannonia .
Weikersdorf was first mentioned in 1146 as "Wikkersdorf" or "Wicherisdorf". The name refers to the Old High German name "Wigheri" (comrade in arms), probably the name of the founder, owner or clearing leader.
On April 1, 1945, Russian shock troops of the 99th Guards Rifle Division stood directly in front of Weikersdorf am Steinfelde. A Soviet tank advance was repulsed by the German defenders. Then Soviet artillery bombardment takes place on the village. The then mayor Hermann Laferl succeeded in establishing contact with the Russians and agreed to hand over the place on April 2, 1945 without a fight.
Population development
With the construction of new cooperative apartments and quarter houses, the influx of people has been accelerated in the last few years - so in 2008 this beautiful community is home to around 1000 residents.

According to data from the 2001 census , 89.7% of the population are Roman Catholic and 1.2% Protestant . 2.7% are Muslims , 0.9% belong to Orthodox churches . 4.8% of the population have no religious denomination.

The right to use a municipal coat of arms was granted to the municipality of Weikersdorf am Steinfelde by the Lower Austrian state parliament on July 3, 1984.
Economy and Infrastructure
In 2001 there were 32 non-agricultural workplaces and 75 agricultural and forestry holdings according to the 1999 survey. According to the 2001 census, there were 467 people in employment at the place of residence, the activity rate was 49.63 percent.
Weikersdorf has developed into a center for business settlements in this region. The municipality's industrial area is characterized by its ideal location on the outskirts and with a direct motorway connection to the A2 (southern motorway).
Culture and sights
- Parish Church Weikersdorf am Steinfelde hl. James the Elder: Originally a Romanesque choir square church from the first half of the 13th century, the core of which is still present. In the first half of the 14th century construction of the tower above the choir square. In the 15./16. The Anne Chapel was built in the 17th century and has served as a sacristy since 1753 . Under the Viennese canon Franz Zeißler a renovation and partly new building took place in 1753. Among other things, the three-bay nave was built, the choir was raised, the tower was raised by a bell chamber and a baroque spire was put on.
