history

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province .

In 2008, parts of a Roman Maierhof were discovered behind the rectory. The early Bronze Age salt path from Halltal near Mariazell and the Roman road from Savaria to Vindobona led through today's municipality . A Roman grave stele originated from this time, which was stolen by art thieves in the 1970s.

In the early Middle Ages, the parish was founded as a subsidiary of Fischau. Several nobles had their subjects in the village: For example the Puchheimers , the Pálffy , the ladies' monastery Göss id Styria, the new monastery in Wr. Neustadt and the Stubenberger , as well as a number of small nobles. The districts of Saubersdorf and Urschendorf were wine-growing areas. The parish church in the rural Romanesque / Gothic style contained special art treasures that can be seen today in the Vienna Diocesan Museum. Another gem of medieval art is the Rome fountain setting in Urschendorf.

In the 15th century, the Puchheimers took the side of the Hungarian Mathias Corvinus: They were taken over by Emperor Friedrich III. beaten and lost their property in Saubersdorf. The parish briefly became sovereign, but then came to the canons of St. Stephan in Vienna. Like many others in the area, the place was Protestant and counter-reformed. The war with Corvinus, the 1st and 2nd Turkish wars hit the area hard. The intervening incursions by the rebellious Hungarians were even more difficult.

The castle in Gerasdorf, last owned by the Habsburgs, was converted into a juvenile prison after the Second World War .

In the first half of the 19th century, the southern railway was opened, and the place got a station, which is five kilometers away.

40 years later, the Schneebergbahn and the lace factory were built in the Urschendorf district.

In the same century, the first Viennese spring water pipeline was built in the Neusiedl district. The largest elevated tank in Austria was also built there after the Second World War.

In St. Egyden the family name Scheibenreif was born, which has spread to this day in the Schneebergland, Schwarzertal and the thermal baths.

Today St. Egyden is mainly a place dominated by farmers, but with many employees and workers who, as there are too few jobs, have to commute to Wiener Neustadt and the Schwarzatal.

On April 7th and 8th, 2020, 30 hectares of forest near Saubersdorf were caught in a fire . A total of 4 helicopters and 2 fixed-wing aircraft were used by the police and the armed forces to extinguish the fire.

On January 1, 1971, the communities Gerasdorf am Steinfelde, Neusiedl am Steinfelde, Saubersdorf and Urschendorf were incorporated into St. Egyden am Steinfeld.

Religions: According to the data of the 2001 census , 81.2% of the population are Roman Catholic and 3.0% Protestant , 1.1% are Muslim , 0.5% belong to Orthodox churches , and 11.4% of the population have no religious beliefs Confession.

In 2001 there were 49 non-agricultural workplaces, and according to the 1999 survey there were 85 in agriculture and forestry. According to the 2001 census, the number of people in employment at the place of residence was 827. In 2001, the employment rate was 47.84%, the largest employer in the municipality is the prison Gerasdorf with approx. 90 jobs.

In Neusiedl am Steinfeld, the Neusiedl am Steinfeld water tank is one of the largest drinking water tanks in Europe.

Südbahn : St. Egyden received its first station in 1841 on the Südbahn. This station is located about five kilometers southeast of the town center in a forest area between Wiener Neustadt and Neunkirchen. The station on the Südbahn was renamed on the occasion of the opening of the Willendorf – Neunkirchen regional railway and was called St. Egyden Süd until 1939 . The station settlement St. Egyden was built in the vicinity of the station. The St. Egyden station on the southern line is an unoccupied through station with two main tracks. The third main track was dismantled in April 2011 and the side platform was built next to track 1. According to the ÖBB framework plan, the existing level crossing was replaced by an underpass in 2012. At the northern end of the station a second switch connection was set up and the southern switch head was removed. From an operational point of view, the station is therefore a transfer point that is remotely controlled from the Wiener Neustadt station. It is an unoccupied stop for passenger traffic. Regional trains stop in the direction of Payerbach-Reichenau or in the direction of Vienna Floridsdorf , Retz , Břeclav , Znojmo and Bernhardsthal . There are also individual regional express trains in the morning and in the evening in the direction of Vienna Meidling , Vienna Central Station and Mürzzuschlag .
Schneebergbahn : The Urschendorf stop on the Schneebergbahn, which opened in 1897 and still exists today, is just under two kilometers closer to St. Egyden than the station on the Südbahn.
With the opening of the state railway Willendorf – Neunkirchen in 1909, St. Egyden received a stop on the western edge of the town, which was called St. Egyden local station and later St. Egyden stop . Passenger traffic on this route was discontinued in 1933. After the cessation of freight traffic in 1942, the route was gradually removed again.
