Carl Junker (born June 18, 1827 in Saubersdorf , Lower Austria , † May 17, 1882 in Vienna ) was an Austrian engineer and architect . His construction projects include Miramare Castle near Trieste and the 1st Vienna Spring Water Pipeline .

Life

Carl Junker was born in Saubersdorf in Lower Austria in 1827 as the son of a landlord. He studied from 1842 to 1845 at the Imperial and Royal Polytechnic Institute in Vienna and became an engineer. In his professional activity he mainly devoted himself to the construction of aqueducts and water pipes. In 1847 he was involved in the construction of the Suez Canal under Alois Negrelli . In 1855 he took over the plans for the construction of the Aurisina aqueduct near Trieste. In 1856 he was commissioned by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria , the brother of Emperor Franz Joseph , to build Miramare Castle in Grignano near Trieste . In 1860 he took over the construction management of a church in Bar in today's Montenegro . For the project he was supported by Pope Pius IX. awarded the Order of Gregorius . Between 1860 and 1861 he constructed the aqueduct of the military arsenal in Pula . In 1864, based on his experience in hydrography, he worked on the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Hochquellewasserleitung in Vienna . He was the chief engineer in charge of the design and the construction management from the sources to the elevated reservoir on the Rosenhügel in the 13th district of Hietzing in Vienna . For his work, Junker received the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order from Emperor Franz Joseph .
