Bobby Zankel

Robert "Bobby" Zankel (* 21st December 1949 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American jazz - saxophonist (alto and soprano saxophone) and composer of avant-garde jazz .

Live and act

Zankel studied from 1967 to 1971 at the University of Wisconsin and took lessons from musicians such as Booker Ervin and Jimmy Lyons . He became known in the early 1970s for his participation in Cecil Taylor's "Unit Core Ensemble". During this time he worked in New York's Loft Scene , where he a. a played with musicians such as Ray Anderson , William Parker and Sunny Murray .

Zankel moved to Philadelphia in 1975 for family and professional reasons , where he worked as an accompanying musician, for example with the Hank Mobley / Sonny Gillete Quintet, with Jymie Merritt's band Forerunners , the formation NRBQ , Odean Popes Saxophone Choir and Ruth Naomi Floyd . He also continued his collaboration with Cecil Taylor in Europe.

Zankel also studied composition with Dennis Sandole and has also been a composer since the 1990s; his compositions have been performed by musicians as diverse as Johnny Coles , Odean Pope , Jamaaladeen Tacuma , Lester Bowie , Marilyn Crispell and Ralph Peterson . From 1991 he recorded a number of albums under his own name, first for Cadence Records , then for the avant-garde label CIMP . Tyrone Brown , Uri Caine , Johnny Coles, Marilyn Crispell and Odeon Pope also worked on his albums . In Philadelphia he was also active in numerous music, ballet and theater projects. Most recently he played in the Dominic Duval Trio with Joe McPhee and works with his "little big band", The Warriors of the Wonderful Sound .
