Dave Burrell ( Herman Davis Burell , born September 10, 1940 in Middletown , Ohio ) is an American jazz pianist.

Burrell grew up in Hawaii , where he played in a rock and roll band. From 1958 to 1960 he studied at the University of Hawaii , then until 1965 at the Berklee School of Music , where he played with Tony Williams and Sam Rivers .

After completing his studies, he founded the Untraditional Jazz Improvisational Team in New York with saxophonist Byard Lancaster , bassist Sirone and drummer Bobby Kapp . He also worked with Marion Brown and Pharoah Sanders (1966). In 1968 he was one of the founders of the 360 Degree Music Experience with Grachan Moncur III and Beaver Harris , which he did not start with until 1977. With these two musicians he was also involved in Archie Shepps album The Way Ahead in 1968 . In 1969 he took part in the Pan-African Festival in Algiers and stayed longer in Paris, where he played and recorded with Archie Shepp, Alan Silva , Sunny Murray , Lester Bowie , Jeanne Lee and Philly Joe Jones , among others .

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Burrell worked regularly as a sideman for Shepp. In the late 1970s he composed the jazz opera Windward Passages . In the 1980s and 1990s he worked mostly in various line-ups with David Murray ; Among other things, recordings of pieces from his opera were made with his wife Monika Larsson as a singer.
