The city of Middletown , Ohio is located in Butler County . It was founded in 1883, and in 1886 the town was raised. Today it has 48,694 inhabitants ( 2010 census ). To the northeast of the city is the regional airport called Hook Field ( IATA code MWO), and Miami University has a campus of four in Middletown.
The name is believed to come from the city's founder, Stephen Vail. At least one of the local historians said Vail was from Middletown, New Jersey. According to other claims, the name came from its geographical location as a navigation point on the then important waterway on the Miami River.
AK Steel operates a steel mill in Middletown .
An event of note was the last successful arrest of Clyde Barrow in March 1930 .

According to information from the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 66.8 km². 0.4 km² (0.54%) of it is covered with water. The city lies on the Miami River, which used to be an important waterway for transporting goods from New York via the Great Lakes to the American Midwest.
