William Verity

Calvin William Verity Jr. (* 26. January 1917 in Middletown , Ohio , †  3. January 2007 in Beaufort , South Carolina ) was an American businessman and politician , of the Cabinet of President Ronald Reagan as Secretary of Commerce ( Secretary of Commerce ) belonged to.

William Verity received his bachelor's degree in economics from Yale University in 1939 . He then worked for the steel company Armco Steel, founded by his grandfather and based in his birthplace Middletown, before he joined the US Navy and fought in World War II . He was used in the Pacific and achieved the rank of lieutenant .

In 1946 he retired from the military and returned to Armco. There he initially held various director positions, before becoming Vice President of the company in 1964 and finally Chairman of the Board in 1971 . In 1982 he retired from the company.

In the previous year he had taken over the chairmanship of the US Chamber of Commerce ; Also in 1981 he was President Reagan's non-partisan working group on initiatives in the private sector. He was also vice-chairman of the Economic Council for trade relations between the USA and the Soviet Union between 1979 and 1984 .

After Minister of Commerce Malcolm Baldrige was killed in a riding accident in July 1987, William Verity was appointed as his successor. He took office on October 19, 1987 and served in the Cabinet until the end of Reagan's presidency in January 1989. During his tenure, he established the Commerce Hall of Fame to honor valuable ministry employees and the Office of Space Commerce , which was designed to expand the commercial use of space.
