John E. Bryson (born July 24, 1943 in New York City ) is an American businessman and politician . After he was nominated on May 31, 2011 by US President Barack Obama as the new Secretary of Commerce of the United States , he held this office from October 21, 2011 to June 21, 2012.

Life

Education and career in the private sector

John Bryson received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University in 1965 ; it followed in 1969 the Juris Doctor at the Yale Law School . Together with a few Yale fellow students, he founded the Natural Resources Defense Council in 1970 , a non-profit environmental protection organization, for which he worked as a legal advisor in the years that followed. He was also chairman of the California State Water Resources Control Board and served 1979-1982 as president of the California Public Utilities Commission , the regulatory authority for public utilities in California .

As a result, Bryson went into the private sector. In 1984 he became vice president of utility company Edison International ; In 1990 he was promoted to chairman of the board of directors and CEO there, which he remained until July 2008. From 2000 he also served as the company's President. He also served as a director on the boards of Boeing , the WM Keck Foundation and the Walt Disney Company . Appointment as US Secretary of Commerce

On May 31, 2011, John Bryson was introduced by President Obama as the future Secretary of Commerce of the United States. Bryson should be "an important part of the economic team" of the president, said Obama in a short address. The Commerce Department said Bryson was hospitalized overnight for treatment. Bryson's deputy Rebecca Blank took over the management of the Commerce Department. On June 21, 2012, Bryson announced his resignation.
