Howard Malcolm Baldrige Jr. (born October 4, 1922 in Omaha , Nebraska , † July 25, 1987 in Walnut Creek , California ) was an American entrepreneur , manager and politician .

biography

Baldrige, son of the same name Congressman Howard M. Baldrige from Nebraska, studied English at Yale University and graduated in 1942 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English . He then began his military service in the United States Army as a private in the Pacific War . During his military service he was promoted to captain and retired from active military service in 1946.

On his return he worked first as a rolling mill and then as a foreman in the foundry of the Easter Malleable Iron Company . In 1960 he finally owned this company himself . In 1962 he became Vice President of the Scovill Corporation and in this role oversaw a number of company takeovers until he himself was President of this internationally oriented company in 1972.

Already during this time Baldrige was an active member of the Republican Party and as such head of the presidential campaign of Richard Nixon in Connecticut in 1968 . He took on this task in 1980 for George Bush . After Bush became Ronald Reagan's vice-presidential candidate for the 1980 presidential election in the United States , Baldrige worked as a fundraiser for their campaign.

Following the election of Reagan to the US president Baldrige was from this to the Secretary of Commerce ( Secretary of Commerce ) in the Cabinet appointed. He held this office until his death. Baldrige, a keen rider since childhood, was killed in a rodeo accident on July 25, 1987 .

On October 17, 1988, he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Reagan , one of the two highest civilian awards in the United States , along with the equal gold medal of honor of Congress .

The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award , a prestigious, annually awarded quality award, is named after Malcolm Baldrige.
